I have a front brush guard and really want tow hooks or maybe even a front hitch if possible without losing the guard. I know it takes the place of the factory style, but i like the look of the brush guard and its my support for my foglights.
Has anyone with a brush guard tried some universal tow hooks and bolted them through the mounts where the brush guard bolts to the bumper support? I rarely ever take this thing off road but when i do i want some sturdy hooks for the front if need be.
Or for the hitch possibly just longer bolts and and let it be above or below where it bolts into the bumper?
I will need to take a look at it in the morning so i can remember what it looks like but i figured i would ask cause i know this issue has came up before! :)

PM JeepDawg over on LOST and ask him how he did it. His work fine when we hauled him out of the mud.

The brush guard bolts to the area where the third bolt would on a factory tow hook, i would use some of the examples where guys added shackles using a tow bar and bolt them up on either side of the brush guard. They get bolted to the frame which is far enough over to have along with the brush guard.

I probably won't get it done this year but next summer thats going to be one of my projects. I found some cheap drawbars like in the how-to. Just have to take stuff apart to get in there and install them.

The PO that i bought the KJ from had these tow hooks but i took them off when i put the brush guard on thinking they weren't strong enough, they use one of the factory tow hook holes and another hole he made himself.
Think they would be strong enough or not?

How do you like your brushguard? Thinking of putting one on and modifying it to handla a winch.

I would love to get a backbone, but can not afford it..
I think im gonna get some 1/4" steel and have a buddy weld up some brackets using the 3 towhook holes and the universal style towhooks i already have.
I'll need to draw up some ideas...

Cheaper than a backbone... Fab up a front hitch and use that for winching and recovery, that is if you don't have a brush guard... Though if you really wanted to get creative you could have both.

There was a post on here not too long ago with drawings and measurements for making the front hitch receiver.

Next year i plan on doing one of two things...

1. Make bars to install shackles on either side of brush guard.
2. Fabricate a front hitch, remove brush guard and install front hitch, then reinstall brush guard by welding/bolting it to the front hitch crosstube.

I was thinking of doing something similar to your number 1! if i could find some cheap shackles, if not just use these perfectly good tow hooks that i have here, but the shackles look so much better :D

Slightly North of the 49° th. Parallel... In HongC
Considering that a Backbone was less expensive than a brush guard (New prices)
The choice was obvious for me as I already had the winch.
Nice thing about the Backbone is that it does not use the factory tow hook locations for mounting, makes adding a brush guard easier if so desired...

I usually wouldn't be able to afford either. The only reason i have a brush guard is because i got mine used for $90 and that included the steel tail light covers and SS hardware :D Gotta love craigslist!
