Thanks so much for posting this, guys!!! I had recently lost speeds 1 and 2 on my fan and was dreading a visit to the dealer. Thanks to this thread, I was able to spend just a few minutes and fix the problem.

Thanks again! (cool)

I just replaced mine yesterday. Getting the red tab to pull out was a beast of an effort. Not sure if it was just because it was so cold outside or what but, I would up having to use a paint can opener to pull it out.

Good idea with the paint can opener. (Cheers)

Looks like you must remember what order the wires come out of the resistor block?

Does the glove box access open up easily?

Why do these blocks break so much?

I'll be trying this fix tomorrow..... 1, 2 and 3 fan speeds have blown out on my wife's 2005 Liberty Sport.

Thanks!

Well after five years and almost 84000 miles mine finally gave up today, so it looks like a trip to the dealer for me tomorrow. Went out to check and the access is pretty simple. Since I have the time I'll take some better pics of the removal/install for future reference.

I think mines on the way out too. All the speeds work, after a little bit of fanagling. Will usually blow out of the windshield defrost until I switch to 4 then back to what ever speed. Sign it's going out? thanks

Might be a sign of the blower motor having a problem.

The way the resistor block function was explained to me, is that position 4 is "straight thru" full power no resistance added. Position 3 is some resistance and down to position 1 is the most resistance. Resistance slows down the blower speed.

If your blower won't work in pos 1, 2 or 3 *UNLESS* you first try pos 4..... then maybe the blower motor needs a jolt of straight thru power to get going before lower voltage will work.

Just a thought.

So Mike, it starts with air coming out the windshield defrost vents then eventually comes out the dash vents? That sounds more like a vacuum problem, can't see the fan control having any effect on that.

In other news I got my resistor block changed out yesterday only to find out it probably wasn't the problem. More testing today, hopefully it'll turn out to be a switch issue and not the blower motor. :(

I worked on replacing the resistor today and this is by far......... the most frustrating thing I have EVER done on a Jeep Wrangler. Nothing even comes close.

For starters, no book anywhere wants to tell you or photograph exactly where the resistor actually is. When you finally find it by sheer dumb luck, it is practically impossible to get to the screws. When you finally get these out, it is nearly impossible to remove the piece without breaking. There simply is no room physically to get in at this and work with it.

I'd pay $50 to have a dealer do this if I knew in advance. They need to hire a ghost with tools that can go through solid plastic and wire to get in there.

Unbelievably bad design..............my hats off to the idiots in the Jeep Wrangler electrical drawing room.

Did you read post #4 in this discussion thread? And then look at the pictures in subsequent posts?

It really is not as hard as you are making it out to be.

Take a deep breath and go read this entire thread.

Preface: 2005 Jeep Wrangler TJ - 1 and 2 speeds don't work.

I got the red tab out, but I can't get the molex plug to come out. Several questions...

1. What is that red tab anyway?
2. I've tried pushing, bending, pulling, yanking, etc. on the molex plug and cannot get it out. I'm pushing on the black tab (which was highlighted by the yellow arrow earlier in a picture) and it still won't budge. Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

$50?? You'd be very lucky if you could find a dealer who would do anything other than change your oil or put their greasy fingers on your steering wheel.

I was at the dealer for my radiator, and I told them "my fan #1 stopped blowing, and it fogs up my windshield almost everyday when the heater is off", so he goes "probably blower resistor is bad", so, naturally I ask, "How much would it cost to get it fixed"... answer, not surprisingly.. "ahhh, about $300".. OH KAY.

So, now I find out the part costs less than $20 and all we gotta do is squeeze into the glovebox and get the resistor replaced...

Anyway, I am surprised that I havent seen this topic before. Can I order this part online somewhere?
