as much as I like how they look those things I hate tem they always give me a phucked up route to places that would delay me up to 1 hr, I just gave it to my mom.....all I need is a map and an address , besides I have sprint navigation and google maps on my phone and so far it's good enough

no lie i actually left my house in rochester mn set it to charlotte nc and followed the gps the whole way. WOW it took me on some back roads, and crazy streets. in the end it got me there but it was an adventure. i love it for whn i need to go to address's in citys i dont know. might take a minute or two longer but almost always gets me there.

mag, when you go over the Florida Border stop at the "Florida Welcome Center". You can get free maps and such and a shot of oj too. The map will show you how big the ONF is.

Depends a lot on the brand (and how updated the maps are, software version etc. etc.). Living in Seattle, my Garmin does a pretty good job at routing me. Overall, I'd probably rate it at an A-, maybe a B+.

There are a few times that based on my knowledge of streets, it routes me on some weird pathways, but the software manufacturer can't know all of the local oddities that might make an out of the way route better than the major thoroughfare. Generally, it tries to keep you on 'higher speed' streets and arterials. Sometimes a cross street or 'back way' is actually a more efficient way of getting to your destination.

What I find is great about the autorouting is if I have completely no idea how to get to a place, it'll route you there, even if it may take a strange turn, and then as you get close you can make decisions and change your own route as you see fit. Plus, it's very helpful when you're driving on dark roads in the rain and streets are either poorly marked or not marked at all.
