I have a 2012 JEEP LIBERTY SPORT 4X4 with the following:

COMMAND TRAC II - PART TIME 4WD
DANA 30/186MM FRONT AXLE
FOUR WHEEL DRIVE (4WD) (4X4)
3.73 REAR AXLE RATIO
CORPORATE 8.25 REAR AXLE
CONVENTIONAL DIFFERENTIAL REAR AXLE
4-SPD. AUTOMATIC VLP 42RLE TRANS

With approximately 98k miles, I’d like to change out the front axle fluid and would like to verify this would be the correct choice:
Valvoline Daily Protection Gear Oil / API Service GL-5 / 80W-90

FRONT AXLE / SAE 80W-90 Multi-Purpose Type, GL-5 Gear Lubricant or equivalent.
REAR AXLE / SAE 75W-90 Gear Lubricant or equivalent.

Thank-you!

The front axle gear oil you selected is correct. I just picked up some GL-5 80w90 by Lucas. I don’t think the brand is critical, but the oil weight is.

The rear should be…
SAE 75W-140 Synthetic Gear Lubricant or equivalent
… according to my owners manual (2008). It is important that this is synthetic oil as well as the right weight.

I guess now I’m a little confused for the rear axle. In my 2012 Jeep Liberty Owner’s Manual, it simply states ‘SAE 75W-90 Gear Lubricant or equivalent.’ (Page 504)

Ha! I guess Jeep changed it between the 08 and 12 model years. They may have been trying to achieve 0.1 more mpg or something by using a thinner oil. It was on p. 449 in the 08 manual.

I decided to look up the requirements of my 2012 Liberty compared to your 2008.

2008 Recommendations…
Front Axle: SAE 80W-90 Multipurpose Type, GL-5 Gear Lubricant or equivalent.
Rear Axle: SAE 75W-140 Synthetic Gear Lubricant or equivalent.

Looks like Jeep made a change from 2008 to 2012 (I didn’t look up any model-years in-between) but nothing in the Owher’s Manual as to ‘WHY’. So someone like me that isn’t mechanically ‘informed’, how am I supposed to know what’s best? Our Liberty is strictly for on-road use only, never four-wheeled. (Years ago, I took it up to Lake Tahoe with a little snow on the highway.) Our original purpose was only to flat-tow it behind a motorhome because it has an actual transfer case but I never set it up for that purpose.

Both specs are correct, heavier oil gives slightly more protection. The older manual *(2003!) Gives both options.
