transfer case

i have a 2003 Liberty and cannot get into 2wd. i push the lever all the way forward and it shows 4w part time on the dash. When I shift to full time or 4w lo it grinds and makes terrible sounds. I cannot find anywhere if there is an adjustment to the lever. I can find a cable from the lever to the case but don't know how to adjust. Can someone tell me if there is an adjustment or what may be causing this problem?

the dash light is a result of a bad transfer case position sensor...about 70 or 80 bucks at a jeep dealer and an hour to swap it out...as for the grinding/ cable adjustment i dont know but just to weed out a simple possibility: are you shifting the tcase properly? transmission in neutral is a must for a 4lo shift and very slow moving and i usually do the same for a shift into 4hi...hope this has been of some help
