How can I tell which transfer case I have... 2002 Jeep Liberty automatic (with overdrive).

ok, reason im asking is I am thinking of replacing it with another that doesn't have the plastic parts that break ...

any suggestions on either cable replacement or transfer case replacements?

found a way to fab a replacement for the plastic parts on the transfer cable. Will do that after the dealer fixes and if it breaks again.

Simple: If you have a full-time option you have the 242. If you do not, you have the 231. IIRC there are aftermarket shifters available.

Can you swap out the 231 for the 242 I would really like the full time option?

I've considered this option too and I think it's been discussed somewhere else on this forum.

It shouldn't be hard to swap in a Liberty 242 T-case for a 231 but you may need the BCM programmed for the change. Also unless you live in a winter climate you won't be using the full time 4WD often. It can't be used on the trails, they'll burn up.
