I am surprised at how much traction this thing has in 2wd. I did a little light off roading today and I was surprised as how well it did. I did have it in 4 hi one time and had to sort of gun my way out of a rut and the light came on for the traction control.

Funny, I am surprised at how little traction this thing has in the rain that the traction control is comming on all the time. Even if I feather the throttle it can't get a grip. I would like to say it is my crappy Goodyear Wrangler ST tires, but I can't tell for certain. I will know the truth when I get new tires in the next month.

Considering how badly rated they are on TireRack, it's the tires, not the traction control.

I have an 06 liby with ESP/TC, but I haven't been in a situation where it kicked in yet so I can't say if I like it or not.

It's the tires. It will get better when you change 'em. My ESP comes in when my Jeep does the "live axle hop" on washboard roads here in the city. When I had the STs with about 35K, it would hydroplane in the rain, the ESP would come in and turn the cruise off. My Firestone Destination LEs are a huge improvement.

yea its the tires. i got the crappy goodyear wrangler sr-a. i know your gonna say but thats a different tire but its the tires that come stock on the kj for the 02-04 model years and the STs come stock on the 05-07s. its still a $hitty tire from goodyear so its kinda the same. anyways whenever i touch the gas not even in rain just on wet pavement my jeep peels out in place doesnt peel out while moving. i dont have traction control or abs so it happens to me all the time.

ST's and SR-A's and Wrangler HPs (on KJ's with 17s) came on all Libertys 02-9 depending on trim level and model.

At any rate, no budke, you do not have traction control with your '02.

ThunderbirdJunkie does, however...it's called a LOCKER ;)

Another vote for the tires.... I had the stock crappy Wranglers on mine, the rear end wagged on gravel roads, and on rainy days i could spin the tires at the stop sign just by tapping the gas.

With my new tires, Kumho Road Venture KL78, its night and day. The ride is better, i have plenty of traction, can't wait for snow now!

Does it only kick in when the light comes on? I thought maybe it was always on and the light only came on when it detected a lot of slip or something.

In any event mine has a lot of traction in 2wd mode.

Well the manual says this:

The ESP/TCS Indicator Light, located in the instrument cluster, starts to flash as soon as the tires lose traction and the ESP system becomes active. The ESP/TCS Indicator Light also flashes when TCS is active.
