For any of those you wish to see it.The one above came out of my brand new D30A when I installed my DTT(the diff is now under JL Rockies KJ).I wish I had a regular D30 carrier to compare it with, maybe soon since the D30 carrier is a different part# then the D30A carrier.

For those that are considering adding a lunchbox style locker to the D30A(highly advise against it,Aussie does to) you will need to completely remove the front diff from the KJ,and you will need to completely remove the carrier also. Why? Well the center pin needs to be removed to install a lunchbox locker and the D30A carrier uses a roll pin to keep the center pin in and not the normal bolt.Have fun removing the roll pin also, you will need to drill it out.

Top view, the roll pin is way bigger then this opening(small hole on the left side)...................

And they mushroomed the other side also to keep the roll pin in place...............

Have fun,it's going to be alot of work installing a lunchbox locker in a D30A,oh and the backlash will need to be set again since the carrier has to be removed, might as well spent the extra $100-$150 and get the DTT installed

Thanks for posting the info & the pics.

I thought the bigger problem with a locker in the Dana 30A axle was that it was made of aluminum and couldn't handle the stress of a locker?

Only applies to auto lockers like lunchbox style lockers or the Detroit Locker. The DTT is very forgiving and the ARB is a selectable locker.

Funny i thought we just went threw this. No one........repeat no one has reported blowning a front diff with a LOCKER. Be it a lunchbox, an ARB or Detroit Locker.

We found 10 or so case's of blown front diffs from forum members and all where either open diff or DTT. Those are the facts.

I thought all front diff cases failed because of the torque transfer from spinning wheels [after they catch traction.] That transfer of energy was then transmitted into the aluminum housing, which expanded and then cracked as it passes it's material yield limits...

Yep. Almost all the members we talked with broke the diff while spinning one front tire then grabing traction with that tire. That transfer of force is what breaks them. The only oddity was one CRD owner who broke his towing backwards on pavement in 4 low.

Towing in reverse is bad on the D30A. His having the torquey CRD and in 4 Low made it worse.

Of course you will never hear of a D30A blowing with a Detroit Locker or a lunch box locker since you can't use them in a D30A.

Those who have blown with a DTT did not know how to drive with a DTT in the front, otherwise there diffs would not have blown(expect the guy with the CRD).I wheeled the s%$t out of my KJ,rock crawling not playing in mud,and was on 3 wheels more times then I can count and never, ever had a problem with my D30A and the DTT since I knew how to operate the DTT to make it work for me saving the D30A.Now saving the front CV's is another story:D.
