Well this has been an interesting day, Regarding oils and such. So does anyone mind if I throw out a question? and short story?
Rebuilt my 350 and ran dino oil 10w-30 for first 60,000 miles, then developed what I thought was lifter noise. Adjusted vales all were good and in spec and a friend mechanic told me that it was not lifter or valves but a cam noise, due to lack of oils sticking onto the rear lobe. He told me to switch to 5W-30 and add 1 bottle of blue STP, Guess what no more noise engine purrs like a Kitten.
So I ponder since most wear does occur at start ups, has anyone actually used it even half a bottle from beginning or to quieten down like me in higher mileage motor with good results?
I know the manual says oil additives are not necessary, but That STP is sticky stuff and I am almost temped to try a half a bottle in the KJ too. Opinions appreciated without insults please.
Does anyone have a way to do a sheer test using 5W-30 and a light mixture before and after adding STP. to determine it's characteristics safe or not?
Gunk build up is what I am worried about ...
I forgot to add the main reason I am considering this is that the jeep sits for long intervals, and only gets started every 3-4 days while in storage modes. I have Stabilizer in fuel, and have a light mixture of Lucas top oil /fuel conditioner in gas too. I let the KJ warm up fully 15 minutes and move it around to get the rust off brakes etc, run air conditioning too.
