steering pump

I am full of questions and here is the next one.
Just few days ago I had checked the oil level when starting up the engine I saw the steering pump that is moved by the rubber transmission belt start and stop. I try to explain better, there is like a clutch inside the disk moved by the belt, it looks like this clutch deactivate the steering pump blocking the disk when no power steering is necessary. Could it be?

You're talking about where you made the arrow?

From what I understand, that's the viscous heater. It helps the engine warm up faster by heating up the coolant which gives heat to the driver and passengers MUCH faster. Very effective.

Yes.

In the cold, without that heater, You'd be waiting forever for some heat in the cold weather. Ever driven a diesel without that pump?

Forever is actually an understatement...

It actually has a mechanism inside it that churns a separate, highly viscous fluid. That fluid gets so hot that the coolant passing through the pump housing gets warm too.

No before the KJ I drove just one diesel car VW lupo TDI a very little city car I didn't recognize this heater. The Lupo engine warmed up within 15 kms (10 miles approx) but now I admit that the Kj engine is real faster warm that the VW some minutes!
I have a privete pilot license the are airplane where the water pump does not start until the right temperature has not been reached then the bulb activates the pump.

It is ok to know your car but that you know more than a technician from Jeep? That is worrisome! How can I trust them the next time I will go for a maintenance check?

Another problem my wife needs now real my help my daughter is next to born and I have spent too much time on pc she said

On Thursday is expected the born because she is 2 week late to the expected time of born.

Yeah well, we all know how good JEEP 'mechanics' are...

I searched my manual but it seems to be missing the heating / airco chapter. Thanks for posting that link, now I know what it does. I might see it work someday, when I park my car in the freezer

From that article:' It turns on when the air temperature is below freezing and the engine is below its operating temperature.'

It never gets any colder than 5 degrees Celcius over here.

And if anybody cares: VW's TDI uses glowplugs in the heater inlet hose.

The exact temperature at which it activates is decided by the vehicle manufacturer. I can hear mine come on below about 45ºF.
