Question for you guys: Everytime I start my jeep for the first time during the day I always let it run 30 secs before I start driving. I've always done this.

Is this a good idea or just a waste of time?

Its a good idea. Long amounts of idling are bad but 1-2min when cold is perfectly fine. When it gets cold out I switch to 5w-30 oil and let it idle for around 1-2 min before heading out. In the summer Ill wait 30sec or so just to give the oil time to get to the top then head out.

You should always be using at least 5W-30 oil. These new engines might be able to use thicker oil, but the return holes in the heads are not big like they used to be in the old days. With sludge problems these motors CAN have; and other complications, you can starve the motor for oil with it all up top. I have seen this happen personally, with an intrepid, and a 4.0 Jeep Cherokee my pap used to own. He caught it in time. amd all was fine, sludhe clogging the return holes on one bank

Personally; I used 10W-30 in V6 my Avenger all the time, never had a problem... I used 10W40 in the summer, still never had issues, was just fine, though people REALLY say not to do that. I am using 10W30 Synthetic in the Liberty now...

I only use 10w-30 in the warmer months.

Never seen any sludge in our 4.0's. Never had the 3.7 apart so idk if it has any sludge in it or not but I would assume it does not.

5w30... I let it idle for a minute or two until the rpm drops down to about 600rpm, then i know its blood is flowing and warmed up enough to go.

i let mine warm up a few minutes in the summer and over 5 in the winter to let the oil flow good and get the metal parts heated some as well as the water temp.

I usually wait about a minute. I'll probably wait a little more during the cold winter months. Running 0W-30 year round.
