Hello all, recently I noticed the red indicator on my shifting column seems to be stuck or broken.

I dismantled the column in hopes that it was just out of place and needed to be clicked in. But that doesn't seem to be the issue. Has anyone else had this problem or similar issues? If so, how did you remedy the problem?

Here are a couple pics.

Thanks in advance for any and all help on this issue.

The only thing I can think of is that some sort if connector between the shifter and the indicator is disconnected or broken. When you are driving, does the indicator slide up and down freely??

This happened in my wife's 98 escort. Never seemed to be any kind of problem, you just had to know which gear you were in without looking.

The "red" mark is supposed to slide with the black tape. Somehow those have been disconnected. You can take the shifter apart and then try to reassemble it.

Console Shifter, not Shift Column (which is on the steering column = Shift Column).

This stuff happens all the time, as long as you know WHERE you are, it's fine. Other people that drive your car may have difficulty, I have seen that first hand. I had a 1993 Aerostar where the column shifter indicator was broken. I knew where to go with it, by my brother had to learn it...
