CRD Throttle Issue

My 2006 Liberty CRD hadn't been started or run for eight months. It started right up and great. I left it run until it came up to temperature. I then took for a 2-3 mile drive. After about a quarter of the trip, I noticed that the car was accelerating to 2,000 rpms every time I just touched the accelerator pedal. It would drop down to idle when I touched the brake pedal. I then noticed that the red light was on the instrument cluster. I finished my trip and parked it and turned off the ignition. When I restarted it after a few minutes and the engine rpms spiked, so I turned it off immediately. Started it again with the same results. Not many CRDs in this area, so I hate to have it towed to several garages. Can I dig into the problem and remedy it myself?

On a diesel motor, engine rpm's rising without throttle input is possibly indicative of engine oil leaking (from somewhere) into the intake manifold and then igniting under cylinder compression.

It is CRUCIAL to note that such a situation can result in a complete and uncontrolled engine runaway even after the key is turned off. In fact, if enough oil continues to leak into the air intake, RPMs will pass redline and will continue either until combustion AIR IS COMPLETELY CUT OFF or the engine self destructs.

(Search Youtube for "Diesel runaway" if you want to see the carnage of such an event)

PLEASE NOTE that I am NOT saying this is definitely what is wrong with your CRD or that it is absolutely what will happen if you continue to start it, but that the runaway scenario seems possible based on your uncontrolled rpms and that you MUST to be prepared to physically block ALL airflow to the intake in order to stop a runaway if you continue to try to assess the problem yourself!!!

The ONLY way to stop a runaway is to COMPLETELY block off the air intake going to the turbo either with a physical stop block that effectively seals off the intake or with a CO2 based fire extinguisher that will displace and replace the oxygen until the uncontrolled internal combustion stops from lack of air to burn.

That said, hopefully someone else here will chime in with also something more useful … like where to search for the oil leaking into the intake.

Which red light on dash? Was it #29 on the diagram shown? If so, replace the accelerator sensor and / or check the wiring connector.

^^^Thats a much gentler and nicer possiblity then the scenario that I was suggesting might be the case. ;)
