I am sure over heating problems have been discussed at length in other postings but I am new to the forum and cannot find my particular topic.
I have a 2005 Renegade and on a cold morning on the open road the temp gauge hardly moves off zero. On a hot day and open road the gauge will go to about 1/4. Even in very slow heavy traffic it hardly reaches half. My mechanic says this should be cause for concern. Any comments or advice.

I am always running dead center. I would check the thermostat. Does your heat work? I have an elm327 and dash command which allows me to see exact numbers. A quarter of the way is only like 140 degrees.

I am running a scan-gauge which reads actual temps. Averaging 200 degrees in the summer give or take a couple of degrees. My dash gauge with the needle reads just below the half-way mark. (3.7L gas 05)

Not normal.. probably wont hurt anything except gas mileage, might cause excessive carbon build up though.

I am always running with the temp needle straight up, middle of the gauge. When the weather drops into the 50's, the needle lowers by MAYBE half a needles width. But never varies from that. Even in 100 degree temps with AC running, needle was rock solid.

Checking actual temp as reported by the sending units with my Innova 3160d shows me always between 197-205 degrees F.

First the gauge is more or less an idiot gauge anyways, doen't tell the exact temps anyways. You need to get an accurate gauge to see what its really doing.
But sounds like its not fully warming up so start with the thermostat , replace it, hoses if they have not been for a while, flush the system really well, then move on from there.
My 04 always ran about 198 average , the 03 runs about 199-200 according to the scan gauge

Dead center is 189-208 and fan is suppose to kick in around 211. I've been logging mine with Torque where the fan did and didn't work, and also where on top of that air was in the system. It goes up to 208 and drops back to 189 in about two-minutes when healthy even sitting still. High speeds it stays low.

It's a closed loop system meaning the reservoir is the only cap and it's pressurized. I believe it can handle 20-25 PSI but you pressure test at 15 PSI it should hold there.

Use only OEM thermostat and hoses. They are cheap. Zerex G-05 50/50 only despite what most mechanics will force on you, and Blue Devil flush and gasket repair if needed.

The bleeder valve on the top rad-input hose is useless just run without res cap on to get air out.

Sounds like thermostat is stuck open. Do yourself a favor and get it from the dealer. Oh, they also revised the coolant reservoir cap to if needed..
