Hey guys
I've been having some trouble with the KJ's transmission. It's been slipping for a while now, and I'm thinking it will be time to replace it in a few months or so.
I've been offered an automatic trans from an 04 Rubicon... Will it work for a KJ?

it should
provided it is an auto
I think they put the 42rle in them
I do know that up to '02 they had a 3 speed TF999 (or 909 and I think 929 depending if you have a CJ or a YJ/TJ with a 4 ******)

I would say they have a different bell housing and probably a different torque converter. The 4.0 got its torque at different rpm's so hopefully they didnt use the same torque.

'Should' work..

Now here's the real question...

Are you sure your transmission is broken, or could it just be something really simple, like the torque converter itself or maybe just some screwed up fluid?

THATS WHAT I WAS THINKING. GET IT CHECKED OUT FIRST . IT MAY COST A HUNDRED BUCKS TO HAVE CHECKED OUT BUT THEN HE MAY SAY JUST CHANGE THE FLUIDS AND YOU WILL BE FINE.

Im pretty sure she has had the fluid changed recently. Not sure if ATF+4 was used or if the pan was dropped. Cant remember if it was flushed or not. Its been slipping for awhile now from what I remember.

edit: She said it was changed last year in june, filter was changed. Seems to 'slip' when its shifting like a ****** would do if its on its way out.

... was it with ATF+4? If not then that's likely the reason it's acting up.... If that's the case, SOMETIMES a change back to ATF+4 fixes the issue. (But longevity has still been dramatically reduced)

It's actually been doing this since last Feb and getting progressively worse. And I have had some people drive it around that would know if it were the trans.

I have a 90' Chevy Silverado as well as a KJ and it was doing this exact same thing this summer. I took it to my mechanic he drove it and said it was the ******, needed to be rebuilt or replaced. He dropped it and it turned out to be perfectly fine. The "simulated" slipping was caused by the engine missing. He replaced the plugs, wires, distributor cap and fuel filter. It ran like new and still does, so I'm not saying the trans isn't your problem just that it might not be.

Geez I remember being chastised when I said Chrysler automatics were prone to failure a few weeks ago...hmmm. The evidence will keep piling up in my favor as all you automatic KJ'ers get up there in milage and years.

No problem with my truck trans:D.I can rebuild my whole trans cheaper then you can get your clutch replaced:D.Oh and I can tow more, have less shock loads placed on the drivetrain and not to mention that 3rd pedal is a hindrance doing technical offroad obsticals.

Frikki got her kj used so its hard to tell what the previous owner did as far as maintenance and how they treated it.

So far out of the 5 chrysler transmissions that we have in our driveway, youve been proven wrong. :)

Yes, screwed up fluid. If you bought it used, or had the fluid/filter changed, and they didn't use ATF+4 then that could be the problem. Only ATF+4 should be used in the KJ A/T. It is a high quality synthetic and the KJ ****** does not like other ****** fluids. I would suggest changing that first and see what happens.

Just a thought.
