I think there's something seriously fubar with the brakes on my 05 KJ CRD.

I've had the rear brake moan on occasion, on cold humid mornings, but just enough to hear and I can count on my fingers the number of times it's happened since I've had the vehicle.

Over the past couple of weeks, several times when I've started the vehicle and then put it in reverse, it almost felt as if something was holding it back, and I got a momentary shudder when I applied throttle and got it moving.

4 days ago, it happened again - except this time there was enough resistance to stall that diesel engine at light throttle in reverse!

I restarted the engine, and this time it backed up as if nothing were wrong. Since then, it hasn't reoccurred. Matter of fact, it backs up and rolls much easier now.

This morning I managed to get out and take a look at the rotors. All four of them were colored a dark blue. I was able to look at the outside brake pad on the drivers side rear wheel, and it looked as if it had some small chips missing from it's edges.

One gent I know in Charlotte with an 05 CRD says that when he serviced his brakes, he found that Chrysler didn't put any lube on the caliper guide pins - his were dry and rusted up.

It has seemed of late that in-town fuel mileage has taken a nosedive. With what I saw of the brake rotors and the one pad, I'd say that I've had ALL FOUR brakes dragging on me.

I've owned the vehicle since new, 47K miles on it now, no previous issues with the brakes, original pads, looked good with plenty of material when last inspected at 41K miles. No idiot lights going off.

Any thoughts, opinions, or recommendations?

I'll have to agree with TBJ. I had the same thing on my Saab just before I got rid of it. Of course, it was a HELL of a lot more $$$ to fix that it is on a Jeep.

The possibility of all 4 calipers seizing at the same time is very low. Also, a locked up caliper should never stall the engine. My pins were not greased at all and both of them were seized on my front calipers. Have you raised the Jeep up yet to see if all 4 wheels spin freely?
