Jeep Renegade Concept
It's small, simple and designed to play in the dirt. By Shaun Bailey and Photos by Marc Urbano provided by: The Renegade concept is pure Jeep. It's small, simple and designed to play in the dirt. Mechanically, it's a plug-in diesel hybrid with 4-wheel drive and seating for two. The engine is a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder that when combined with the 16-0kWh Li-ion battery pack, claims Jeep, could result in a 400-mile range and 110 mpg fuel economy. A great little off-road vehicle designed to minimize environmental impact. There is no paint. The color is molded into the composite body; same goes for the color and texture of interior bits.

Aftermarket manufacturers and buyers will appreciate the concept of a wireless dash. All gauges, stereo controls and navigation displays are plug-and-play on the dash power bar, thus allowing for quick customization by the owner. From a manufacturing standpoint, it allows left-hand and right-hand drive cars to more easily share parts. According to Scott Anderson, the principal interior designer, "The Jeep Renegade concept's interior — actually the entire vehicle — is designed to minimize the number of parts necessary for assembly and function." The result is a less costly and more environmentally friendly Jeep.

Although many aspects of the Renegade will never make it to production, its overall theme could. Maybe there will someday be a Jeep Wrangler Hybrid.
