remote start question

Hi All,

I have a 2004 3.7 Cherokee/Liberty KJ. I would like to buy a remote starter, but I prefer a plug and play system. On some sites I see there are some plug and play remote starters for modelyear 2005 -2008. Can I use this in my 2004?

My car has got keyless entry but does not have a alarm but does have the gray keys(with chip inside).

Another question, I like to have a folding key (incl fob) what is possible?

Plug and play is not a option, in order to install one you will need to a expert at wiring because you will need to splice together the wiring.

Even the factory kits require some splicing (just installed one on my Charger). There are empty fobs available, problem is the chip is milded into the key head; some people get around this by leaving a key in the column (not ideal), by extracting it from the key (which destroys the key) or getting a compatible chip, putting it in the folding key fob then having it mated to the SKIM.

Doing any one of those ^ renders the factory security system permanently inoperable. For the wife's car, I bought the remote start, and a separate module that bypasses the security system only when starting the car with the remote. Then paid someone to install it. I'm pretty darn good with things electrical, but after watching the installer, I was glad I paid to have it done.

Third I might add, if you have a Manual Trans stay away from the remote start system. Too many people do not use the parking brake and leave the vehicle in gear instead. I don't need to tell you how many stories of cars and particularly a BRAND NEW MUSTANG a Dealership had to write off after they put one in for the owner. Upon demonstration not realizing the tech who did the job left it in reverse, the Mustang went for a swim in the lake it was parked in front of.

Ok, I see that I have to do some splicing. Splicing is not my biggest concern. My concern is that I don't know what I can/should buy. In the Netherlands, remote stating is not very common. I had it on my (even not common in The Netherlands Truck, my Chevy Avalanche (2002). I'm pretty handy myself, But I want a system that is pretty straith forward. Best option for me is using the OEM keyfobs. I do not have a factory alarm and I do have a automatic gearbox.

How does it start if it's in gear...?

It's not supposed to, if installed correctly. You would want to have a switch rigged up that allows the starter to work only if the shifter is in neutral. Even with the e-brake pulled up when in gear, the engine is likely to overpower it.

When remote starts are installed on Manual Transmissions, the safety interlocks are bypassed so the vehicle can be started without the clutch pushed in. This is why usually you can not get a factory remote start kit for a Manual Transmission.

Just for fun I checked the factory parts book, 04 doesn't list an oem remote start kit, so you will most likely have to go aftermarket unless they came out with a compatible one after the fact.
