A few weeks ago I built a rear shelf, much like the ones shown in countless threads. This past weekend, I ran into my first problem with it.

I was packing up the KJ on my way out camping and my cooler would not fit under the shelf.

Has anyone built or see potential in building a custom cooler, one that is low profile enough to keep under the shelf and have room in between for other gear but wide enough to have some storage area?. Something with an internal height roughly the size of a "grown up soda" is what I was thinking.

It's all compromises. If you can't find a 'short' cooler, I would simply purchase two smaller coolers. You say a 'grown up soda'. By that I'm assuming you're meaning a 40oz? Give us some actual dimensions and someone here might be able to find something for you.

Coleman 25Qt Party Stackable Cooler.

I saw these at the store about a month or so ago. If I remember right, it wasn't that deep. Just enough for a pop-can and some ice. Almost bought one as I have the retractable "privacy cover" in the rear and my old Ice chest just won't quite fit... (can't get the wife to throw the cover out. - Oh well, her KJ )

That coleman may be exactly what I need, just something to hold a 12-18 pack and some ice. I'll have to measure, but the 33qt version of that cooler may work as well.

Thanks for the link!

Say you've given me an idea idea.gif Why not fabricate a custom rear shelf/chest cooler combo with a door on the top?

Those stackable coolers look pretty nice. You could probably slide them right under the rear shelf you've built.

You could also bracket the shelf mounts to raise it up a few inches to accommodate the cooler you have. You can make an adjustable height shelf with the right hardware.
