I dont know a ton about these cars but hopefully i could get some help.

Today i was driving home and start getting a howling noise(only on deceleration) which sounds like coming from the rear end(i have been having noise but thought gear whine, as i already did axle bearings) anyways i turned onto my street and all of a sudden i hear a pop and my car just kinda grinds to a halt.

I hop out of my car and the rear driveshaft is hanging from the trans and thats it. fluid started coming out of the back of the rear end. i pulled the driveshaft out and tried putting it in 4wheel since i was less then 20 houses from mine but the car didnt want to move, felt like i was locked on something.

i Got the car towed home and jacked the rear end up and it spun freely so that eliminated the differential pin coming out and locking up(unless it fell out while towing the short distance)

--Could the trans have locked up and forced the ds out?

--how is the ds attached to the rear pumpkin? it looked like its bolted but there was no nut i could find.

---Do i have to tear out the rear end to replace the seal on the back of the pumpkin so it doesnt leak?

--would the car move without the rear ds in place if in 4wd or would it lock up(towed home with front wheels on ground no problem)

Any help would be greatly appreciated as i dont have a ton of funds and hoping the cars not a whole loss.

If it is home and jacked up. take a picture of the rear end where the DS attaches so we can see what happened and why it is no longer attached there. If the rear locked up while driving and it sheared the yoke on the rear end allowing the DS to drop. then you may be right about the pin or something else coming loose and then rattling out on the tow home.

(memory lane...) I had an old 92 Dodge Power Wagon that was stuck and high centered in deep snow with the right side tires in a snow-filled ditch and left tires on snow pack. I was trying to rock it a bit to get going and accidently nailed the brake instead of the gas during the procedure. Well the brakes instantly stopping everything that was flying along and sheared the DS yoke off at the input to the transfer case (extra DS from transmission to xfer case because it was a long bed).

Post that picture of the DS side of the rear end...

Sounds like you may have blown the rearend. Put the tires on the ground and try to roll the Jeep, that will tell you. Just because you can spin the tires while in the air doesn't mean nothing's locking up when both wheels are trying to spin in the same direction.
