Just for your entertainment, last night I went out and had my girlfriend start the Jeep up after it had sat for about 4-6 hours. You can barely hear the rattle about five or six seconds into this video. It goes away shortly there after. Sorry for the poor quality.

When I first bought my KJ, I nearly fell over from the noise on a first start on a cold winters day...thought I was in for some valve work.

I played that video three times, once with earbuds to eliminate and outside noise, and i still don't hear anything terribly out of the ordinary, does anyone else?? There is some wind noise on the video in a few spots where i thought for a second i might have hear some clicking but thats about it.

Still just sounds like lifter noise until the pressures come up. Seems some do it, some don't.

I don't know of a 3.7L that doesn't make that cackle / rattle noise at startup. Heck, mine does it. Some are louder than others though, take my sister's for instance... hers is very noticeable, mine is there, but you kinda have to listen for it. Same goes for others I've driven at work, all make that noise!

Man, I'm not sure what you guys are talking about, because I can't think of any special noise mine makes when cold starting. Mine actually sounds smoother at cold start because the idle is up high during the warmup. Once the idle backs off to 800-900, it sounds a wee bit rougher. Not rough like it needs a tuneup, but it has what I'd call a periodic harmonic vibration in the engine. An occasional shudder. But I wouldn't describe it as a 'rattle', and it definitely doesn't do it on cold start. When I get my video camera fixed, I'll take a short video/sound sample and post it.

Mine does the same thing....just to a slightly lesser extent. I'm not worried about it...

Mine had some valvetrain noise for a short time after start-up when I tried a different kind of oil. Next oil change, I used a different brand, and the noise is gone. I'm sure they changed your oil after all that work, so that's a possibilty.

Also, some people get noise with certain brands of filters. Next oil change, go back to the oil and filter you were using before, and see what happens.

Never thought of that... Is yours one that used 5w-20?? I read on here that the later years recommend 5w-20 and the earlier years like my 03' recommend 5w-30...

If they went with a heavier weight of oil that could explain the noise as the pressure builds and everything quiets down. I used to have an old car that i ran lighter oil in it for the winter otherwise the valvetrain noise was horrendous.

Hmm..I'm very interested in this. I recently converted over to Valvoline Synpower Full Syn and hear this chatter loud and clear after it's been sitting. I'm on the second oil change now...I'm pretty sure this chatter has always been there but I'm not positive. It seems I'm used to the noise, but I almost started a thread right before this one was opened and it's somewhat relieving to see the consistency with it...

Mine is quite noticeable, even with the windows rolled up. Runs like a champ though :).

The 5W-30 to 5W-20 switch was done for MDS (our engines are not capable) and fuel economy reasons. Nothing more. Nothing actually changed inside the engine to require 5W-20.

And ShafferNY, that engine sounds *exactly* like my sister's 3.7L. Mine for some odd reason, is quieter, but makes a similar noise.

It really was a poor quality video. I took it with a crappy digital camera. The video doesn't do the noise justice. It really doesn't.

Since the work was done at a Jeep dealer, it's got mopar oil and a mopar filter on it. I have no idea what weight oil they used.

What if you changed the oil to any good Syn 5w30?? It certainly can't hurt and it should flow better than dino.

No, mine calls for 5W30. I think they went to 5W20 in '07.

That's funny...Synpower is what quieted mine down! When I got the Libby, it had QS dino. Then I used Formula Shell dino. Next I used QS Q-HP...that's when I got the noise. I wasn't concerned, though. I trusted the oil, and got my best-ever MPG w/ this oil. Now I have Synpower in it. I can't say the noise is totally gone, but it's back to where it was, which is minimal.

I tried these various oils because I got great deals on them after rebates. Next spring, I'll change to Conklin Convoy, which is my usual oil, and stick to that.

Multi Displacement System

Yeah, that... in the 5.7L Hemis. The 5.7L Hemi NEEDS 5W-20 for the MDS system to work.

Why should a manufacturer buy two different types of oil when they can just buy ONE and save more money?

Why buy 5W-30 and 5W-20 in addition to the oil they put in the Cummins diesels?

Why not just buy 5W-20 and save more cash? And the customer gets additional (although very miniscule) fuel economy? It's a win-win situation.

There goes the story of the 2007+ Chryslers "needing" 5W-20.

Ok, i know this is going off topic a bit but i have to ask...

What does oil viscosity have to do with MDS then?? I just read a half hours worth of material on the subject and see no mention or reason for the oil having to be a specific viscosity.

Just trying to learn something new!

Oh I don't know. :) I just know that it won't work without it. I don't think Xw30 is thin enough.
