Hey everyone, I am getting ready to tow my 1977 BMW 320i from Southern Oregon to Southern California. I've rented a U-Haul car trailer, which weighs in at about 2300lbs. The car weighs in at about the same, for a total tow weight of about 4600-4800lbs.
I will be taking the I5 down, so it will be a fairly easy drive with only a few steep hills to conquer, so I'm not real worried about the Jeeps capability in towing the combo.
My question is this: When putting the car on the trailer, should I put it with the engine over the front or the rear of the trailer? With just the weight of the trailer, it seems to put a lot of weight on the hitch, so I am worried that the added weight of the car's front end may cause some trouble.
I've got a class III hitch with a 7500lb ball rating, though I'm not sure on the tongue rating.
Any other words of advice or wisdom from those who have done a lot of towing?
Thanks!
