Thanks. I'm saving that link in case the dealer would find it useful...

After a few months of no check engine light and plenty of trouble free driving, the light is back on. It's at the dealer now.

It was being worked on since 10:30ish yesterday, 2 techs on it and they can't pin point it yet. They have a few more things to try today.

So it's throwing the code but they can't find out why the code is being generated? And there aren't any drivability issues?

This one is weird, HJ

Exactly. The KJ makes weekly trips to Madison, about a 2.5 hour drive, 150 miles each way. It can go 4 or 5 trips without throwing the codes, and on the rare trip when the codes come, it's usually about when the trip is like 95% done. Drives perfectly through all of it. It's been into the dealer a few times, but the light would always go off as soon as I would take it in and they wouldn't be able to do much- without the light on, there's no indication anything is awry.

Don't let any dealer convince you this. Unless the codes have been CLEARED, they are usually stored there for a while. Trust me...my CEL would turn off right before I went to my trans shop...but my guy showed me his scanner as he was picking up all sorts of data. Codes, shift numbers, etc...

They're saying that it's the front pump switches, so it needs that and a new TC. I questioned them about the TC, since it drives perfectly fine and the fluid is extremely clean, so I don't think it's grenade.

Thoughts? It took them 2 days to get to this point. Kind of seems like they're grabbing at straws. Would it be worth another opinion? They're going to see if the TC is okay today I think.

It's ALWAYS worth a second opinion. At the same time, if they warranty their work you shouldn't have any worries.

They want $2200 to replace the tc and front pump switches. I just find it hard to believe it needs that much work even though it drives fine. If the tc were bad wouldn't it have been pretty noticeable and not intermittent? And if that's what it needs, probably just get a new trans/rebuilt/newer junk yard one since it's got 150k on it

Holy crap, can you shop around? A buddy of mine recently bought an 04 Grand Cherokee and the trans started slipping badly. Code said it was a bad torque converter, which it was. But with the miles it had (140k), a replacement/rebuild was the sensible thing to have done. I sent him to a highly recommended local independent transmission shop. $1500 out the door (no ups, no extras) for the guy to drop the trans, rebuild it, new torque converter, new shift solenoid pack (done automatically since they tend to crap out and are buried under the valve body), and reinstall. I considered that a hell of a good deal.

If you bring it to a good local mechanic with a sheet of work you want done and provide the parts it will probably be 300-600 instead of 2200 [emoji32]

Wouldn't be suprised if the dealership is bsing a bit to, i thought TC issues can be felt right away in the drive line response...

I think I need to shop around for sure. There aren't a whole lot of transmission shops in the area. Maybe even try another dealer?

Yeah, that's what is so weird is it shifts completely fine, light on or not. I'm not even really worried about what work needs to be done at this point, I just want an accurate diagnosis and I'm not completely sure the dealer is giving me that.

I think you mentioned picking up a junkyard one to get rebuilt? Id recommend doing that and bring the trans right to a specialist for the work, then when symptoms develop in your current, just do a swap at home provided you have someone to give you a hand, should save on costs even more as you won't need to pay for install.

I'd get a junkyard one if this one is done...but it's hard to justify replacing a transmission that works as it should lol.
Is the front pump pressure switch in the pressure switch/solenoid block assembly? I've replaced that.

HJ, I'd drive the crap out of it until it actually starts slipping or refuses to shift. In one of your earlier posts you mentioned concern they were just throwing parts at it and their final diagnosis/repair sure seems to back that up.

When mine went bad it was hesitating on downshifts and upshifts, wouldn't kick down to a lower gear when I pressed on the gas - generally very "soft." When I finally took it to a trans shop the tech drove it for 15 minutes with their scanner on it and it came back with bad clutch packs, meaning new or rebuild. The dealer I bought it from paid for the installation of a ****** from an '04 with 28,000 miles on it; I've since put 97,000 additional miles on it and it's as good as rain.

Drive yours till it gives you obvious symptoms.

I agree with this. Unless you need to get it inspected. Then you might be SOL. Unless the light decides to go out that day.

No inspections here.
Thanks for the input guys. Seems like I will just have to drive it and see if it misbehaves or find a good shop. Think that will risk damaging anything? Talked to the dealer again and they said they just emailed Jeep and that's what Jeep recommended they do. Such a strange issue.
