It's a stupid plastic cover. You need to flick up the license plate to get to two bolts, then you can swing it out of the way and get to the spare tire. Which is mounted on the tailgate.

If you flick up the license plate 2 or 3 times the plastic holder hooks brake of and your lisence will be flapping about when you drive.

You can figure out what I think about this UFO on the back of my KJ. And to top everything of...it will only work with stock rim and tire combo.

245's don't fit.

And all exports have one....guess I'll be looking for different license plate holder..
I'm in the same boat... man! how I hate this thing... If you found a creative way to get rid of it, and keep the licence plate lights, please share!!

Want one..

At first it appeared to be a hinged set up away from tailgate. Regardless..I think that they look awesome. I have a license plate holder with lights in the bumper. I would be the only one with that unique cover here, and the mods similar to the 1st photo would be way cool with the back up lights & antenna etc.
I dislike the "Jeep Liberty" stock vinyl cover that is current on my KJ, as everyone has it on theirs.
Could remove the license plate holder from that and install a...??
Wonder if I could find one on ebay....hmm....even order new and have it sent over here.
Never used my spare ever, my kevlar's hold up well.
So if this export cover swings out away from the tire, how does it then (cover) mount to the tailgate? In the regular bolts that our tire would bolt on to, or is there something different for the mount for this cover?

I remember reading a HOW TO of a guy who removed the tire carrier and replaced it with a custom licence plate mount. Have been looking around for more than 40 min and can't seem to find it anywhere. I KNOW it must be somewhere in my data base.

How does the lead for the lights pass through the tailgate?

You must be registered for see images attach

All the way round the plastic ( The cables run inside protective tubbing)(the ones at the bottom are for the reverse parking aid)

Throught the tail gate

Inner side of the tail gate

(same pic as above zoomed out)
from the gate to the body of the jeep throught the rubber tube.

So YES there is an extra hole in export tail gates.

Does this cover your question?
