Just in case you're not being funny, a murcury tilt switch would be a Bad Idea on a vehicle. What if you park it on a steep hill?

Today's tilt switches rarely use mercury. They have a rolling, steel ball that makes contact. But the term "mercury switch" just stuck because people know what you're talking about.

No offense intended guys but a tilt switch, really? :p

What he's got, where he flips a switch to turn them on is probably the easiest, but if you wanted to make it automatic, use a proximity sensor or a little "microswitch". Mount it in a way that when the hood comes down, it contacts the microswitch "arm" and throws the switch. You might have to incorporate a relay if you want to failsafe to off.

But like you said, its an LED strip, you'd have to leave it on for 3 months to even notice the drain on the battery.
