New Tires

I have a '08 KK - Jeep Liberty Limited 4x4 w/ the skyslider roof - with the 17 inch wheels. The tire that's on the wheel is a P235/65R17. Long story short I want some mudders and or pretty aggressive tire tread pattern. P235/65R17 is not a popular size for mudders or off road tires etc. Can I go bigger and how big without modification? To be honest I don't know anything about tire size!
