Changed plugs to champion copper. The little bit of #5 electrode was burned off but otherwise looked good. Ideas?

take it to a shop and have a compression test done. If you find low compression have them perform a leak down test to determine the source of the leak. If you have confirmed fuel and spark there is not a whole lot left to look at. A compression test will show if you have damaged valves, rings or a head gasket leak. A leak down test will pinpoint it to one of those 3 possibilities.

I kept getting a misfire on a cylinder. I had change every thing from coil pack to injector plugs and what it turned out to be was a faulty lash adjuster which kept the valve open slightly. I still had good compression on it but it would still come up a misfire. I opened up the valve cover and replaced the adjuster and the rocker arm because it created a slight flat spot on the roller. After I did that I never got the misfire again. Good luck with it and I hope this helps.

Given all that i have tried this sounds very reasonable. I think i will have a look. this will be my last attempt to fix it, i cannot see putting new heads or a computer into it. I will have to cut my loses. my wife really likes her jeep but I cannot trust this one(the jeep, not the wife).

Update!

I added a bottle of lucas cleaner, and light went out on it's own! Thinking it had some bad build up. Hope it stays out.

It is the head gasket. Cyl 5 filled with water. must have had a tiny leak or crack and was causeing the light. Today it must have opened up after my wife shut it off at work. Goes to show that every instance could be diffrent no matter how close the symptoms are to someones elses. Will keep you updated.

that;s to bad. How many miles are on your jeep again? this
may be a good point to note for us when it comes to head
gasket failures.

Do you plan on buying something else or fixing it?

Sold the jeep for 3200 cash dude said he would fix it. Got a 2011 Dodge Nitro. Out of all the jeeps I have ever owned [xj x3,yj,tj,mj] I have to say this has been the worst one.
