I’m the original owner of a 2002 Liberty Limited, and my KJ is starting to show its age. It’s got an engine tick, worn-out steering, a hard-shifting transmission, and a few other issues. Honestly, the wheels and tires are probably worth more than the rest of the vehicle, but it’s tough to let it go. I’d love to pull the engine, transmission, steering, and suspension and rebuild it, doing most of the work myself with help from my son and some friends. The body is in good shape except for the paint, and the interior is decent. With 208K miles on the clock, I’m wondering if it’s worth the effort or if I should just move on. My plan is to tackle it in phases—engine first, then transmission. While those are out, I’ll drop the gas tank and replace all the rubber hoses, then pull the front suspension, swap worn parts, and possibly add upgrades or a lift. Any advice, suggestions, or guidance is welcome.
