hi, im a new member from the third world so please use simple english with me besides i dont know anything about cars.

last year i bought a jeep cherokee renegade 2004.
(its badged in my country cherokee not liberty. it has slightly different specs and it looks exactly like this one
You must be registered for see images
with 2 lights above roof.)

it had done 85000 kilometers = 52816 real miles in approx. 7 years.
so the previous owner has done 7545 miles per year and 628 miles per month.

some of u would say thats excellent but i dont think so.

this means that he was changing the oil every 5 or may be 6 months and i think that is bad for the engine components.

i really feel the car is heavy and the engine is not smooth.
i feel it every time i left my foot off the pedal. it sounds like a knock.
i went to a mechanic one day and told me that the engine is full of carbon.

so please advise me. what to do?

should i buy a rebuild kit? and where can i get it?

btw: i have done about 40000 kilometers = 24854 miles since i bought it. it says now 125000 kilometers = 77671 miles.
And we service cars mostly not the dealer coz its expensive every 5000 kilometers = 3106 miles.

Try a Seafoam treatment, that's what it is made for. Some oils help clean too.

No worries about the English, yours is better than a lot of people on here whose first language is English.

A full tune up is in order regarding the engine & other components. You will get less carbon build ups if you drive more on the freeway at highway speeds more often, for a few hours. I use Chevron Techron concentrate fuel additive in a bottle before highway runs 3 times per year. Chevron Canada Retail - Techron Concentrate Plus
City driving requires more frequent maintenance as well.
I use Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic engine oil which has excellent cleaning properties and will produce less carbon by products. For oil filter use Purolator,Mobil 1, which will help to clean the dirt out. You will find that the synthetic will get dirty in about 2500 miles the first time, so change it then, when it gets dirty, as it will help clean the engine out.
New Air filter is also a must before doing the intake cleaning. As mentioned Seafoam can remove much carbon, but if the engine is that bad it may be worthwhile to have a professional shop perform a complete professional emission cleaning using pro chemicals. It should include the throttle body cleaning, IAC TPS & ports (really important on Jeep KJ) which you can do yourself. After any emission clean or seafoarm, new spark plugs should be installed. I use the stock NGK & change them every 30k miles, many use the Autolites with good success as well. You might want to try running a mid /high grade octane fuel to help clear it out and stop any pinging until you address decarbonizing the motor.
The transmission fluid & filter should be changed out every 40k miles.
Front diff (if 4x4) same
Transfer case too...
Rear diff lube I use Lucas..every 12,000 miles !!! (TRAC LOK LTD Slip ADDITIVE) if required.

yep seafoam, mobil 1 full syn which is what the previous owner used, ngk plugs, fram air filter, ****** flush. I used a little bit of transmission fluid in the fuel tank worked for me but not recommended. this is what I did to go from 13mpg when I first got the jeep to getting in the 20s now

It won't kill your Jeep, but it's good to do as the oil additives start breaking down anyway.

Anybody got more info on cleaning the IAC, TPS or any other related thing that isn't just throwing sea foam in the gas tank.

edit: found this

anybody got anything else or is this adequate?

Here is the link for cleaning the Intake Air control.
http://http://www.jeepkj.com/forum/f196/help-help-help-engine-almost-stalling-low-rpms-47972/
The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is accompanied with the white electrical connector in photo1 above the IAC.
I used Throttle body cleaner spray for the intake & throttle plate.
I used Carb cleaner which is stronger, with q-tips on the ports & inside the IAC as it was nasty. Hope that helps.
The PCV can be removed, but with any hose & plastic & connectors etc, I often use a hair dryer to warm them up before trying to remove, as I hate the sound of snapping / breaking plastic.
Oh...Edit: The Techron product is best and engineered for fuel usage.
For the poster using ATF in fuel: Marvell Mystery Oil would be safer for breaking down carbon & Better than using ATF in fuel.

Use Mobil1 Synthetic "engine oil" for longer duration in between changes for vehicles that are not reaching the 5000 miles per year (example)
The seals will remain lubricated longer if you only run the vehicle once or twice per week for instance. The shear (wear) factor of friction modifiers inside synthetics remain consistent longer than regular dino oils.
You will get better gas mileage with Mobil 1 and the base cleaning properties & flow (cold ) characteristic are much superior to any regular dino oil as well.:party52:
Get 100 % Sludge Protection with Mobil 1 Synthetics !! LOL!

PS there is a new standard of engine oils ILSAC GF-5 ensure you are getting quality oils in your engine!
It should be listed on the oils standards sticker.

Question about oil to use for hot climate and high miles.. I live in the Caribbean with temps from 80-95 average.. The jeep has 97000 miles.. Everyone down here tells me to run 15w40 or SAE40 or SAE50.. I know with past cars of high miles I would put slightly thicker oils to compensate but 15w40 and even 20w50 seems like a big jump from 5w30? I had SAE40 on a previous change and the engine seemed quiet and I find 5w30 not so smooth. I know the car has overheated a few times in the past so I dont know how much damage was done but she still pulls like a beast.. SAE40 or 50? I find with SAE30 I get my oil light on a lot when the jeep is hot coming to a stop or sitting on a hill... Your thoughts?

The 3.7 is designed for 5w-30 for year round use,10w-30 is also approved for hotter climates where it never get's below 32 degrees.I would not go above 10w-30 in the 3.7 as you can actually damage the oil pump and/or blow seals due to over pressure from to high of oil pressure.

Oil Light?

Any ideas why the oil light would come on so frequently with SAE 30 over SAE40?
