I got news from Chrysler today. I called about the owner link and while talking to the girl, she told me I have an open recall. I asked what it was for, and she said that apparently there have been a higher number of vehicles, that have been involved in rear end crashes, that have had the gas tank rupture, which results in a higher possibility of fire, in Liberty's without a hitch installed, than the ones that had a hitch installed, so I will be receiving a free hitch for my Liberty. I have been looking around and hadn't decided which one to order yet, and I am glad I didn't. Now I don't have to buy one.

Also, I forgot to mention, I got the additional warranty on the re-manufactured engine too. Woo Hoo! 4 years, 1 million mile warranty with towing, rental car reimbursement, and a higher rate for labor, on a nationwide warranty, as well as diagnostic labor to boot.

Ahhhh, so you're the person who didn't hear about that yet! ;)
I'm surprised you didn't get the recall notice in the mail.

I've only had the Jeep for 1.5 months. I just let the Jeep people know i had it. Thing is, the dealer said they don't have the parts yet. When i asked when they expect them in, they said, a few months. But the lady on the phone at corporate said, a few weeks. Who should i believe?

Don't believe anyone. ;)

This hit the news the day after I bought mine last May. They said there would be word in June or July. The word (in July) was wait until September. The word in September was ___________________. Then, about three weeks ago I got a notice saying it would happen, they needed parts, and look for another letter in the mail "soon as they get them". A few days ago the feds dropped their push for a formal recall.

This is only a guess, but my gut feeling is that the hitches will eventually be offered to those patient and persistent enough to ride the process out. I'm personally taking the attitude that if I get one, great. If I need one before they call me in I'll go online, order one, and install it myself.

Just so you know, this is a sore spot for a lot of folks for a lot of reasons. To put it as fairly as I can: Those who already have hitches aren't overly thrilled about seeing people who never wanted or needed a hitch suddenly eager to get a free one. Those who think the government has overstepped their bounds point out that it's not really fair to expect Chrysler to retrofit Jeeps to comply with a law which wasn't in effect when they were manufactured.

As for the safety issue, there have been something like 23 accidents traced to gas tank ignition due to rear-end impacts. You're about 1,000 times as likely to be taken out by some nitwit txtng thr best frnd w omg did u no sally said johnny....than you are to have a problem with the gas tank exploding.

A hitch was very high on my list of priorities and if it turns out that I can (honestly) get a free one I will take it. I also feel that no one "owes" me one and I'm not going to gripe if I don't get one without having to go out and buy one. Like most people, I am not made of money and it seems senseless to buy something if I don't need to. That doesn't make me "entitled", though. I'm job hunting and if the new job requires me to move any significant distance I will need one. If the one from Chrysler gets here by then, great. If not, I'll do it on my own and not complain.

None of this has anything to do with you, by the way. I'm just filling in the background so if you poke around the forums and happen to mention "gas tank recall" and get an earful you will know why. :)

Wow, ok... I need a hitch, so I want one. If they are going to install one for me for free, great! If I need it before hand, I'll buy one. I just thought it was cool. I have a boat and a cargo trailer that I get firewood with, so I definitely need it. I knew it didn't have one when I bought the truck, but if I had bought it new, I would have made sure that if was equipped with everythingi need. I've had 25 new trucks over the years, put over 100,000 miles on all of them. All of them had hitches and ladder racks. Being a satellite TV service tech requires hauling and climbing on roofs. Now that I'm disabled and messed up, if someone offers me something for free, I'll take it. I mean... Why not?

Yeah, I'm of the same mind. I didn't buy the Jeep with the idea that I was getting a freebie, but if it's out there and I need it I won't turn it down. I think what rankles some people is the sense of entitlement some people seem to have about it. I know you know this as well as I do - maybe better - but I have received a lot in life due to grace. This gives me an attitude of gratitude (wow - he's a poet and he don't know it!), not a feeling of having actually done anything to deserve it. I think if you do your best to play fair and treat others right you are paying it back, at least as much as you can.

Boy, I sure sound preachy tonight, don't I? :angels2:

All recalls are based on a safety issue, and are federally mandated by the Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). They already know you now own it through vehicle registration, not by you telling the dealer or corporate. From a dealers perspective, fixing a recall is no skin off their teeth, it's covered by Chrysler. So maybe you're being told the truth, maybe not. Just stay on their case. You might want to ask them if you buy a Chrysler hitch, and install it yourself, will they reimburse you for the cost of the hitch? If you're already considering possibly installing one yourself anyway, that could be another way around getting it sooner. That is, provided there are hitches in stock. Unfortunately for me, I already have a good class III hitch, so I don't need one. This is a democrat run (for now) America, I want my "free stuff" dammit! ;)

I know you know this as well as I do - maybe better - but I have received a lot in life due to grace.

By God's grace we are saved. He takes care of me. I give him all of the glory, for if it were not for his grace, I would have died a long time ago. At age 35, he gave me a daughter, which saved my life. I was going down a bad road, and when that happened, I changed what I was doing, and straightened out.

When my daughter almost died in mom's womb, only 2 chambers of her heart were beating. My wife and I prayed on the way home from the Dr's office, and gave her to Him. We went to a specialist the next day, and he asked why we were sent to him? Because my daughter's heart was working perfectly. She is now 11, and is healthy and very happy. She is also a Christian by choice and was baptized at her request in 2011. She can quote scripture better than I can. She really puts me to shame actually!

This is a democrat run (for now) America, I want my "free stuff" dammit! ;)

LOL That's what I was thinking!

I'm cut from a different cloth from the people in that mindset though. My dad started his working career when he was just a boy working on the family cotton farm in TX. Then he joined the Army for WWII, he fought in Germany as a tank commander, and had worked up until his employer told him he couldn't work anymore, due to his heart troubles in 1980. He died in 1983. I have been working since I was a boy, on our mini farm, then at 16, when dad died, I got a job, and have worked ever since.

I am physically disabled, joint problems, due to some major injuries, but I am still working 40 hours a week or more if needed. I averaged about 85 hours every 2 weeks last year. I could collect disability, but why. I am still a viable commodity. If I was of the mindset of gimme, gimme, gimme, I deserve it just because I was born! I wouldn't be working.

It's good to read your posts.

I'm glad you enjoy them.

Maybe I should have logged in with Reverend Mike as my username. It seems that I have been giving my testimony as much as asking questions about my Jeep. But then again, it says, "If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels." Mark 8:38 and also in Luke somewhere it has a similar wording to this quote.

Oh my! Well my prayers are with you my friend!

Lord, fill your child Cherrie with your healing power, and remove the financial stress as you are bigger than any problem we have here on this sinful earth. Give Cherrie the comfort to know you are real, and that you can really help. Remind Cherrie to stop taking back the problem, and continue to let Cherrie know that you are working on it in your time. Bless Cherrie's mom for her work in caring for Cherrie in this time of need. Return to her mom, your blessings three fold! I pray in Jesus name... Amen!

In the letter I got they did say that if you had already purchased a hitch and could provide receipts, etc, they would reimburse you within 60 days. As with the rest of it, the ol' grain of salt is not a bad idea.
