Hard to push auto shifter from any gear back to park.

I'm having a problem with my 03 Renegade. The truck shifts from park to any gear with no problem. However when I go to put it back into park it is hard to push it up into park. It seems like it is making a louder clicking sound than it should. To me it seems like when you push the button in to shift that it is not releasing the shifter all the way. I'm afraid to just get in there and spray with WD-40 or something like it. Any idea on how to fix this would be appreciated . Thanks
