I'm going to be changing the oil and gasket on my rear differential on my 2006 Libby. Should I use a paper gasket or apply gasket maker from a tube? And if I use gasket maker, what brand and type is compatible with my gear oil?

Use RTV
Get Permatex High Temp Red Gasket Maker
You can get it at Auto Parts stores or even Walmart for about $6 for a whole tube that will give you 2-3 gaskets worth
Apply it fairly thick, I like to do a little less than 1/4" bead all the way around

FWIW I used the gasket maker the first time i opened up my diff and the 2nd time i used a paper gasket. So far the paper gasket has been fine and the next time i have to open the diff there is less scraping and cleanup

How long to set before tightening the bolts?

What I did was I put my bead around the diff after spraying the whole thing with brake cleaner and lined it up perfectly with every bolt hole
I then threaded every bolt until it was all hand tight and let it sit for 10-15 mins
Once the RTV began to come out of the edges of the cover, I tightened each bolt in a star pattern and then torqued them
The only set time is when you have the diff cover back on but before you torque the bolts

I think I do like a half hour. I've never had an issue with RTV for the diff.

On my Crane diff cover I use ( well used ) a paper gasket, glued to the cover itself.
This was on the 04, changed fluid many times, no leaks, same paper gasket all the time, no extra sealant needed , old drag racers trick
More than likely would not work on a OEM cover though due to bending etc
But someone could try it sometime............

I bought a fancy (and relatively expensive) Lube Locker gasket for mine. As I recall, it cost about $20 but can be reused if you are careful. Saves scraping stuff the next time around.

I use the Lubelocker 8.25 rear gasket, works good.
They also make one for the 42rle trans pan as well.

You're the one who suggested it to me when I did mine last year. Have you tried re-using yours yet? Any tips for removing and reapplying it? I'd like to get another round or two out of it and might do the gear oil again before it gets cold out.

(Which might be next month here in the Cleveland area!) :D

Ya mine was installed in 2011 so it has been off once, and lubelocker was in fine shape then.
I would not re-use more that twice, and get another new one, like I recently did.
Just inspect it carefully you will know if all the ribbing is in tact or not, and always check for leaks, not that I have ever had any.
Are you using the stamped steel OEM cover still?
I have a riddler cover back there and so far so good, even tho the longer SKT bolts are rusted up.
