Gas not gasoline smell in cab

Hi,
I have looked at the other posts relating to a gas smell in the cab but i just need to clarify (as i am in the uk and we call gasoline , petrol) what it might be if it is not the gasoline odor that the other posts might be referring to.
My cab odor smells like 'ground gas' and seems to occur randomly but i suppose is more noticable when i brake or simply slow down.Any ideas from my American jeep owning chums? Cheers, Arron.

Well, exhaust has a smell all of its own, this smell is exactly like the gas you would cook with on your camping stove.

When i bought the jeep, the ac compressor seemed to have been disconected for some reason. It looked deliberate but the vendor had no answer. Could it be related?
