Four wheel drive stopped working.

Hello everyone.
Well, It was a rainy day and I was on a muddy gravel road. I decided to try out the four wheel drive, so I put my 2005 Jeep Liberty in part time for a little then shifted it into 4hi. I went to shift it back into 2 wheel and the lever went down with no resistance at all, its not engaging or disengaging and the 4hi light is still on. I don't think its still in 4hi because it turns corners just fine on pavement. The lever can be pulled back and forth and nothing happens at all. What could be wrong? I'm taking it into the dealer next week but I'm just curious to hear what you might think the problem is.

So it ended up being a broken transfer case cable grommet.

i have got the same problem in my jeep. my 4x4 gear is stuck on the full time position.
do you know how much it cost?
