Engine Warm Up ????

Good Day,

I am from the old school when it comes to leaving the engine idle for about a minute before putting it in gear and driving off.

I know this was common when automobiles had carburetors, but I still practice this habit religiously to allow the oil to reach every part of the engine when starting.

Does anyone else still practice this "start up" or are you'uns just getting in starting the engine and taking off?

Old habits die hard, they say!

Once in a while I warm it up ....My father used to warm up his old Fairmont 78 which allows motor not to tremble, but frankly quite I have never seen the KJ to run different if I don't warm it up.

I always let it run for a minute or two. If I'm not in a hurry, I'll let it run till heat comes out and if there's snow/ice, till that defrosts. If it's really cold out (like below 0F with windchill), I'll plug in the engine block heater.

Media seems to be promoting warm for a minute or two then drive off for fuel savings and emissions.
When it is cooler outside like today 4c or 40F I let the Jeep warm to 125F which takes 6 minutes at idle, before I drive off.

This allows oil,coolant, PS & trans fluids to warm a bit before driving off!
Note it takes 8 minutes to get to 143 F coolant temps, if you are defrosting, without a block heater.

Guess I'm the only person on here that always warms up my KJ lol.. if its warm out I warm it up to 1/4.. if it's cold I let it warm up all the way.
Most peoples KJs probably run fine without warming up, but seems mine doesn't like to drive around in Open Loop.

If its cold enough to need a warm up you probably need a block heater. I use mine when it dips into the 20s but a little higher if the wind is really kickin.

i try to let it idle for a minute.
If it is very "cold" out, I let it idle longer.

I let it idle for at least a minute. If it's really cold, I give it a song's length, about 3-4 mins.

Here's the thing.....I'm just an old guy so in the old days of carbs you weren't going anywhere without a warm up and it was even difficult with a manual choke so you had to let it run a while. .....fast forward to fuel injection. You can just start it and go but take it easy until it warms up. It won't hurt it. I let it run a minute to help thin the oil so it flows better. 60 seconds and that's it and I am off. I keep my speed down in town anyway (30-40 and take it easy until I hit the interstate) and then I am gone. Most importantly this warms up the entire drivetrain so you are not driving with a toasty warm engine and a below zero ****** and drive train.


Course, if it is really going to get cold I just park the pig in the garage and it doesn't get below 32 degrees in there. Usually it is an "outside pig" unless it's going below zero or going to snow cause I'm too lazy to shovel it off.

From other vehicles I have owned I have the practice of warming up the motor until reaching normal idle. The high tech computers these days usually have that warm up idle setting. When you start them the idle stays high for a bit until everything really gets moving inside the motor.


The 3.7 starts at around 1300 rpm then drops to around 1000 then slowly drops to normal. I always wait until it at least drops to 1000rpm and then no beating on the motor until it's fully up to temp. If I have a couple of minutes or if it's extra cold I let the idle come down to normal before taking off.

Same here. Unless very cold then I do this:

Not so sure that radio stations have the time slot for the original Iron Butterfly version! That's like 4 normal songs and 4 advertisements!! :happy175:

I do hear covers of this constantly on Alice Coopers show, but always covers.. which suck 1, and 2 are like... less than 3 mins
