engine bogging down after start!

this has only happened 3 times so far in four weeks, but once in a while when i come to a stop (fairly quickly) my engine seems to bog out. the rpms go down to 300 or less and shakes a little bit and then goes right back to idle rpms and is fine. like i said its only happened three times so far and each time was within 1 min of starting, but only after i take off and stop. my friend says that it is a TCU message error to the ECU, but hes not sure. any ideas?

Could be a few different things. If your torque converter is staying locked up when coming to a stop, it could bog down the engine. This typically causes a stall condition though, and is continuous, not intermittant like what you are describing.
Your IAC motor (Idle air control motor), located on the throttle body, could also be very dirty. Carbon and dirt build up in the throttle body and on the IAC motor and can cause insufficient airflow to maintain an idle. Maybe remove your intake hose to the throttle body and check to see how dirty it is.

well i just bought it in march and i have no clue when or if the plugs were changed, the PO did live on a dirt road and the engine bay was a dusty mess also. i remember checking the air filter and it wasnt that dirty though. i will check the AIC thing tomorrow, but where is it exactly and how do i remove it? and once i get to it, what should i do to clean it?

BTW if it is the torque convertor, what are other symptoms of it? once in a while when i put the shifter in reverse it wont move until i give it some gas but that is intermitent too

I posted up a pic of the IAC location on another thread but i can't find it right now...

The IAC is on the drivers side of the throttle body, lower sensor held on with two screws. The top one is the throttle position sensor. You can try cleaning it but chances are you will end up replacing it if its going. Throttle body cleaner to clean out the hole it sits in and then the plunger part of the IAC itself.

Also replace plugs! I did that on mine finally, bought it last June, made a big difference in how smooth it runs and idles and even gained some gas mileage, averaging 19.1 mpg now all last week.

hey thanks i will try that asap and i will definitely replace the spark plugs. mines got 96k on it so its kind of in the grey area for maintenance being done. ill try searching but if you find that thread post it
