Chrysler has good January (amended) (February 01 2007, 11 AM)
Chrysler reported its best January sales in six years, with strong increases in Jeep sales (19% higher than in January 2006). Overall, Chrysler saw a 1% increase in sales over January 2006.

Ford sold 165,877 light vehicles (55,842 cars, down 32%, and 110,035 trucks, down 10%), with an overall 19% drop from January 2006, due largely to cutbacks in sales to rental companies (by 65%).

Toyota sales rose by a predictable 10%, taking the #2 spot; analysts predict it will hold that spot for the full year. Chrysler Group appears to have beaten the traditional Ford triumvirate of Ford-Lincoln-Mercury in sales this month.

The Town & Country was the only Chryselr brand vehicle to post a sales gain, leaping ahead 16% with heavy publicity of the 2008s. Sebring, 300, Crossfire, and PT were all down by 27-33%, Pacifica - despite its redesign - down 24%. Chrysler brand was down overall by 15%.

At Jeep, the Wrangler doubled sales over last year and then some, with nearly 9,000 sales. Liberty and Grand Cherokee were both down 23%; Commander was up 30%. Overall, thanks to Wrangler, Jeep was up 19%.

Dodge was mixed. Caliber sold over double what Neon did last January, but the Stratus' 10,000 sales were gone, wtih Avenger barely registering due to availability. Charger was down 7%, Magnum 39%. Dakota and Durango were both off, 17% and 26% respectively; but Nitro sold fairly well, making up for lost Liberty sales and then some. The bright spots were the Ram, increasing in sales by 12% (the Ford F-series fell this month), or about 2,500 units; and the Caravan sold well, up 14%, or about 2,300 units. The pair (plus Nitro and Caliber) pushed Dodge sales up into black ink, a 3% net hike, and moved Chrysler Group up 1% overall. But Chrysler is even more truck-heavy now, with car sales down 25% and truck sales up 11%; minivans, SUVs, and trucks are now 71% of Chrysler's sales. The sudden drop in LX series sales must be worrying, though some are probably gratified that the PT, slated for demolition, has finally faltered.

Another analysis will follow.
