So it fits well between the seat. The idea is to be able to move it between vehicles.

It's a 3 pin universal power cord.
I suppose my question is has anyone just powered it from 20 Amp cigar lighter socket and it worked great?

Or should I hard wire it /fuse tap w/common ground for each vehicle?

As long as your lighter plug is in good shape, you should be fine.
back in the day, RS sold a bracket kit that allowed hard wiring and just slide the unit out and stow it, or move to a similarly wired vehicle.

Years back I do remember seeing one of those in the RS catalogue. Not sure how much space that added to the radio though.
I will have to do some research & see if I can find that bracket kit part/model #
Never know, might find one on fleabay !;)
