Here's an odd one...I'm getting brake squeal while not braking. I believe that I've narrowed it down to relatively slow speed left turns. The other day I was just coasting, maybe <15MPH and could turn the wheel to the left and produce brake squeal even though I foot wasn't on the brake.

Yes, the brakes do squeal a little while under normal braking.

Any suggestions on what to look for would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Sounds like it's time for new pads.

Most brake pads have a wear indicator that's built into them....sometimes it can be a squeel, other times it's a high pitch metal on metal scraping sound (you've probably heard it on other vehicles). Basically the wear indicator is rubbing on the rotor (since the pads are in constant contact with the rotors), thus telling you it's time for new pads.

How many miles? OEM Pads and rotors? If the rotors are in good shape and not real grooved, you might can get away with just putting new pads on....but with the OEM rotors which are notorious for warping, i'd go ahead and spend the cash now and upgrade to some good rotors.

Agree with Tim. Check the INSIDE pad for wear. Inside wear faster than outside 95% of the time. Outside pad may look OK when inside is, in fact, shot.

I have a similar squeaky noise coming from the wheels, I only hear it if I am driving on a narrow street or next to parked cars because the noise bounces back from them and allows me to hear it. Funny thing is that the noise seems to disappear when I tap the brakes lightly, when I let go, the noise returns. It is obviously a noise that is associated to spinning, either bearings or rotors, or something.
Plus, the darn vibration is back (Braking from 60mph to 40mph), so I assume rotors are warped once again. Cheap chrysler rotors.

I replaced the pads last year around this time because it failed inspection with a set of Bendix pads from Advance Auto. I'd be surprised if it needed pads again after only 12 months, but who knows, stranger things have happened.

i had a similar problem, squeeling at normal speeds, not braking etc... it ended up being a part of right front brake that had bent and was rubbing against the rotor. i might still have it at home or in my car.. i ll take a pic if i find it.

That'll be cool. It'll give me something to look for.

I think I have the problem on multiple wheels, not just one of them. Most likely front two.

Yup, front is about 80% of the work.

My wife's G6 is the first car I have ever owned where the rears and fronts wore equally.

The braking power is about a 60/40 split in the KJ.The proportioning valve delays the fluid flow to the rear for a split second so the fronts can apply first,it also limits fluid volume to the f=rear since most caliphers/drums in the rear use less fluid(not as big as the fronts). This applies to all vehicals unless you put a adjustable proportioning valve in.

Gotcha - must be getting old. My memory was reading 80/20 for most cars, but 60/40 makes more sense. Never heard anything KJ-specific.

I am not going back to dealer this time for brakes.
What is the recommended brake/rotor brand? NAPA? And how much should I pay (Last time I paid $500 for all 4 wheels, brake/rotor resurface). Yes, that blows...

I just did a buddies front brakes('04 KJ) using Napa Ultra Premium front rotors and there best ceramic pads, cost for those parts was $154 with the tax included.Add about the same price for the rear rotors and pads,so about $300-$350 should do it for parts alone.
