so I noticed yesterday when my wife drove my jeep, that the passenger side brake light was out/didn't work, but the taillight(lights on) worked, and that they run off the same bulb.
I figured, well they are all stock bulbs, 8 years old, so I replaced, all 3 bulbs on both sides and the 3rd brake light, just to have all fresh bulbs, plus the cost was only 14.50 for all the bulbs

well after changing out the passenger brake light, it still would not work when the brake was press, but the light still worked with the lights on, I then swapped the lamp holder from the brake/tail light, with the lamp holder for the reverse light, and now all the lights work fine

I guess a switch inside the lamp holder is bad(was a lot more brownish/black around the place the bulb goes) and only allows the bulb to have just one function vs the 2 functions needed for the upper position

should I worry about buying a new lamp holder, or since it works now, wait till there are problems,

any other thoughts welcome

kind of off topic but when you changed out the center rear light was the housing melted right below where bulb? When I had to change out mine I noticed the housing was melting from the heat of the bulb b/c the house tide of it was wavy and the inside was born a bit from heat.

As for your issue. I'd find a lamp holder in the a junk yard and spice it in. wouldn't be too bad at all really.

Hey Nooby, was your KJ ever in an accident? I've seen way too many cars come out of body shops with the lights all effed up 'cause the dude putting your car back together doesn't "do" wiring.

nope never in an accident

and there wouldn't be any wiring/splicing to change out a lamp holder, as it just twists in and has 2 metal tabs on 1 side and 1 metal tab on the other side to make the connection

and the 3rd brake light had no signs of melting, (and from another poster, no hidden rust)
