2003 Liberty Sport. Needs new tires soon and am looking for recommendations for a moderately priced tire mainly for around town and highway use that is "quiet".

There are so many to choose from. What would you recommend? Hoping to stay under $500 mounted and installed for set of 4. Tks

Wow, that's going to be tough but really depends on where you are. I see NC but prices likely vary from my location. Around here anything under about 120-150 per tire is not so good. We always have the buy three get one free offers floating around at Pepboys. They have some Coopers H/T and the Definity H/T (made by Cooper I think). I've heard good things about both but no personal experience. They also have Hankook H/Ts in stock. They aren't too pricy. My wife's van always get tires from the dealer. they always have the best price on the Michelins that run so well on it.

Be patient, I'm sure you'll get lots of guidance from others who are better informed than me very shortly. This is a great site for all kinds of info.

Firestone Destinations are pretty quiet, boring but quiet.
The LE is strictly a car tire type tread in my book, with the AT a little more open tread design.
I ran the Destination ATs for a while after ditching the stock tires that came on mine new.
Did good for what they was.
Looks like the LEs are on Tirerack for 404 for 4
Kumho KL78s are not too bad of a tire, more open tread but still fairly quiet , they are just a bit more than the LEs . I ran them for 10,000 miles i think it was .
Of course everyone thinks the Generals AT2s are a good tire , but I'd say more noisy than what you may want , I'd put the Destination LEs and ATs plus the KL78s above them as far as overall performance

Stay away from the General Grabber AT2 if you are looking for highway. Little noisy and won't help the MPG you are probably considering.

interesting... i looked at the label on the drivers door and it says 215/75/16, yet the tires on the car are 235/70/16.

not knowing much about tires - would anything in between 215-235 fit? i know rim size is 16 and 70 or 75 must be width, so the first number is height??

can save a few dollars if go lower in height according to all the sites i've seen...

goal is quiet and safe. tks

The first number is the width in mm, second is the % of the width that the height is and the last is the rim size.

So a 235/70/16 means 235 mm wide, 70% of 235mm tall, 16" rim

The stock liberty had two different sizes. You can go with the door label for a bit smaller. So it goes height/width in relation to height/rim size.

Like Czar said, don't let anyone tell you different. AT2s are NOT quite.

The GY Silent Armors I had before were nice and quite on road and not bad off the tarmac either. Not sure it they make them anymore though.

So far the only time my Destination A/T's have made road noise was in Georgia since the interstates there are a little beat up. Otherwise I have no noise with them.

Silent Armors were renamed to:
Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure With Kevlar
They are very good, & quiet, ok in snow & mud (has snowflake rating) and the tread layer of Kevlar makes them strong.
I don't think you will get a set of 4 of those for $500 even though these would be a good choice for all around quality for the KJ.
I still run the older silent armors. Link to see new All-Terrain Adventure:

thanks for all the info. learning as i go. guess i'll have to spend more than I'd like on tires - better to have peace of mind than worry about "what if's" with a lesser grade tire.

again, thanks for the info and I'm sure I will be asking other questions as we get to know the jeep... pretty impressed with it's power so far and the thing is like a tank compared to the nissan versa we had that got totaled...
