Excuse the title but really, had a half a tank of fuel and threw in $20 at an Esso station, after a heavy rain. Next thing I knew going up the steep hill, there was a flame out, engine stalled, and a sound like poof or a big fart.
CE light was on and I realized the poor KJ had experienced some water downed gas, and luckily I had a couple of bottles of gas line antifreeze with water remover, threw that in the tank, gave the kj a good side to side push, to stir it up, and it did restart after a few tries.

I went back to the station and told them what happened the next day, and was told I was not the only one, that had a problem. Apparently they re-filled the station tanks in the heavy rain early in the am, and some must have got inside. The gave me my $20 back.

Could this cause any damage to the injectors or the motor?
Oil does not appear to have any bubbles in the new Mobil1 synthetic.
Seems to run ok and CE light did not come back on after codes cleared.

Been there done that...

Had the whole family packed up in the minivan, stopped at a Casey's General Store because it was on the way and never had issues with them before, got filled up and back on the road, ten miles later she started bucking like someone was plowing into my bumper...

POP POP... PFFFFTTTT...

Had some injector cleaner in the fluids box in the back, always kept a spare quart of oil, transmission fluid, some coolant, and all that stuff with for long trips. Dumped that in and did the same thing, sloshed around a bit, waited, cranked, cranked, fired it up and run kinda rough for a few minutes as it worked the rest of the water out then got on the gas hard and pounded her for a few miles and no problems after that.

Complained a few days later and they looked at me like "so what you do want for it"... I just walked out and never went there again. You shouldn't have any lasting effects from it though. It happens.

The real question is, why are you doing anything but just filling all the way up?
Just putting a partial tank of gas in a vehicle seems like a tremendous waste of time.

TBJ - I think he was saying he already had half a tank and topped off with another $20 of gas which is like, 4 liters or something up there, right? I can never get my Canadian conversion right.

Speaking of filling up, who else loves when a gas station is busy and some dude in a tiny car pulls up behind you and has to wait FOREVER while you fill your monstrous 18.5gal tank? Happened to me yesterday and I was smiling the whole time. It's the only thing that makes putting gas in my Jeep enjoyable.

Oh man thats funny you mention that... I pulled in for my bi-weekly fill up, got down to 1/4 tank again and stopped for a fill up. I'm there listening to the pump go kerchunk kerchunk kerchunk, and this little Toyota Prius pulls up to wait behind me. Couldn't help but smile thinking how long he was going to wait.

If i'm in a hurry i usually hit a different station. Two of the stations in town have their pump speed set slow for the elderly crowd... No kidding thats what i was told by the station owner, she said too many complaints of the pump being too fast. I told her she should turn the speed up on one of them and put a sign on it, like this is the Express Pump Use At Own Risk... LOL

Then the local COOP station the pump is like WHRRRRRRR, you can fill from 1/4 tank in like a minute or less.

I hate it when it's the other way around. Sometimes I'll pull in behind a small car thinking that they'll fill up and zoom away. It always turns out to be my luck that they go inside, use the washroom, wander around inside the store, do a week’s worth of shopping and then pay for the gas and slowly pull away... ****** me off to no end when (censored) (censored) do that (censored).

ThunderbirdJunkie waits for no gas.
If a subcompact is in the way, it isn't for long.

"Sir, what did you do to my car?"
"Oh, is that your foil pancake?"

FYi: I did have half a tank, before I put $20 (4 Gal) in because it was 1 degree with side winds of 40mph blowing, and my pump and the guy on the other side, were fighting to get fuel in. I think it took 3 minutes to get the $20 in, I gave up frozen. Good thing, I think the gas was F%$ken water anyways.

So this is a common problem? gas stations with bad gas? Maybe I should start to carry a bottle of gas line antifreeze in my Jeeps.

I have to wonder what somebody is to do if they do get a tank full of bad gas (or four liters) and doesn't have any gas line antifreeze in their trunk? Could they expect the gas station to pay for a tow?? I have heard rumors of bad gas ruining engines, gas being put in the gas station's diesel fuel tanks

Myself I always top up my gas tanks on Thursday evenings. Our gas prices are adjusted at midnight on Thursday night and has been known to rise as much as two or three cents per liter. That's one of the tricks of buying gas in metric, they can raise the price three cents per liter, nobody bothers to think that its actually an increase of over ten cents a gallon

I use the same station every time but I wait two days after thay get there tanks filled. Dont want the bottom of the tank or the first of the tank. For me this works out to be a Sunday and increases are basicly the first of the week, unless its a Holiday weekend then thay jump faster then I can from a stop light and more often.

A bottle of pure water remover made for ethanol would be best.
I wonder now with the blended ethanol (corn fuel) since the water does not dissipate as easily and sits on the bottom, if a regular water remover would really help. I know in the marine business there are now fuel stabilizer designed for ethanol.
Sounds like since most of our fuels contain ethanol, we should consider adding the special ethanol stabilizer's once in a while to be on the safe side, and carry a spare bottle.
