Search didn't really pull much up, but I wanted to hear your opinions on alarms / remote starts.

I just ordered the Viper 5901 2-way setup. I figured I might as well go for the alarm if I was already doing the remote start.

Has anyone used a Viper system in their KJ? How do you like it?

Did you have to sacrifice one of your keys in one of those boxes that reads the signal from the key chip for the remote start? When I had a remote starter installed in my wife's Acura they had to take the spare key and mount it under the dash in a receiver box with a ribbon cable wrapped around the key and plugged into the cars computer system.

No, I'd have to look up the number (it wasn't much $$), but I bought a DEI unit that emits an RF frequency. Basically you run an antenna up near the lock cylinder and then you program the BCM to recognize that frequency as an acceptable key. When you activate the starter, the transmitter unit emits the frequency and the security system thinks that an acceptable key has been used.

So, it doesn't bypass the security system.

If you locate that part number that would be very helpful. This will be my first winter with my Jeep and I'm thinking of putting a remote start in but I don't want to sacrifice a key. I've read on here that some people complain that it takes a long time for their KJ to heat up.

Thanks in advance.

mine takes about a 3-4min drive so far, in the high 30's to low 40's to heat up. not bad actually. you can get a key blank off of ebay. dealer = $54, ebay = $13 shipped ;)

I bought an e-bay key because I wanted the non-fobbed key so I can use my remote starter remote :)

I don't think the warmup time is bad, the other day it was 34 degrees when i went out in the morning, windshield was frosted over, fired it up and turned on the defrost and went back in the house about five minutes and came back out to a warm interior. Of course when it gets really cold it will probably be more like ten minutes, or five minutes and drive slow until i get out of town.

Just one thing about those remote starters, go a good job installing it if you do it yourself, if you have someone else do it make sure they do a good neat job. I have had to repair too many of those damn installs when the vehicle will no longer start because of a bad connection or clipped wire, etc...

Agreed. The lead installer at work who will be doing mine is MECP Master certified. The brain of the Viper has a lifetime guarantee if installed by an authorized dealer, and the labor of the install is guaranteed for as long as I own my Jeep.

You going to watch them install? That is the best way to make sure they do things right. Even if you don't know what they are doing, most people do that "something" extra if they got someone looking over their shoulder.

Yeah, the MSRP is super high. I'm not paying anything close to that though, even with install. It should be here soon. If anyone wants, I can put up a review when everything's done.

what you paying for it. i was gonna get that same viper 2 way in a shop by me and they wanted $300 plus $200 installation. then i went to a shop that sells exclusively prestige and the remote start 2 way was only $300 for everything. i didnt have the money for that either so i just got a 1 way prestige alarm for $150.

for an alarm, that's too rich for my blood... I prefer the big barking/snarling dog for my alarms.

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
If you have the OEM alarm(chip in key) be darn sure the installer is very good and they warranty there work for life.I've ripped out more aftermarket alarms out due to being the cause of a no start condition on many vehicles over the last year. Also since we did not install the alarm we charged heavily to remove and fix the wiring that the installer messed up.Make sure the installer does not use scotch-locks to install the alarm/remote start, all they do is cause problems in a year or two, seen it way to many times before.

that almost happened to me. my alarm was acting funny. i called the place that did it and they sent a guy over. turned out the factory battery finally crapped out on me and i had to get a new one
