Hello all, novice here who hasn't posted in long time..Anyway, so I have been wanting to look at some live data due to some driveability problems and other issues I have been having and could use some advice on getting the data

I don't want to break the bank and buy an expensive live scan tool which I don't know how often I would use. Rather, I would think I could perhaps do something like this...

Buy one of those obd-ii to usb cables off of amazon and then get free/open-source software (I run Linux) and then plugnplay? It seems it should be this easy but from what I understand there are nuances to how diferent manufacturers implement obd-ii at the chip level and all that jazz.

Appreciate any suggestions/solutions to scanner tool
