75W-140 in the front?

I was going through the work orders of my Jeep and I noticed that they used 75W-140 in the front and rear diff. Rear diff, great that's cool but as for the front diff, was that a wise choice of them?

However out back, 75W-90, unless in the case of towing, in which case 75W-140 (Synthetic) is to be used.

So yeah, they were right. Either one could be used I'd say.

Really? The manual says 80W-90 for the front...anyway, the diff fluids were changed twice, once at 15K, once at 30K. 75W-140 in both diffs both times.

My manual ('03 Export) says 75W140 syn front, 80W90 rear (75W140 syn if you tow), and the US '04 manual (available on Jeep's site) says 75W140 syn front and 75W90 rear unless you tow (then you should use 75W140 syn)

i dont see why you would NEED that heavy oil in the front diff...

the rear one is doing all the work.

They both work all the time, all day. The front axle moves whenever the Jeep moves.

yes i know but the front axle is not under load unless you are in 4wd.

so its not generating anywhere near the heat that the rear will be.

it would be a different story if you were in 4 wd all the time.

the rear axle is doing all the work unless you are in 4wd.

Moving parts make friction do they not?

The front differential needs synthetic oil because the pumpkin is small so it doesn't hold much oil. This is compounded by the fact that the front diff doesn't get good air flow with the front skid installed. This is / was the reasoning for the heavy oil.
