Has 150k on it. Might be me used to the AW4 in my old Cherokee but it seems to have a short stumble shifting from to second. Shift points are fine and no reving up while shifting.

The 42RLE is not the brightest on the block. Is the fluid clean or smell burnt at all?
If you have not serviced the transmission recently, it would be a very good idea.
New gasket, filter, ATF+4 by dropping the pan is best.
I service mine every 50k. I also add Lubegard red transmission additive, which helps smoothen out shifts, and keeps fluid a tad cooler.
The stumble may also be engine caused, and new spark plugs every 40k is considered normal maintenance.
Use NGK- ZFR6F-11G gap at.040 inch. The gaps wear down quick with this hot ignition system.
Clean the throttle body & IAC and ports also, ensure smooth operation of throttle cable linkage & butterfly.
I'd also have it scanned with a pro OBD2 scanner to ensure it does not have random misfires, from weak coil packs etc.
Also look for any pending or present OBD2 codes or CVI clutch Volume index.

I like the autos in the KJs way better than then old sluice boxes in the Cherokees
Even new ( bought 3 XJs brand new ) never liked how they shifted when full on taking off

Those AW4's are tanks and last forever. No clue if one would bolt up to a 3.7 but they have their own computer, so that wouldn't be an issue. The 42rle wouldnt be so bad if the programming wasn't done by a 3yr old.

Shift kit helps a lot , second day I owned the 03 it had one
My second XJ with the AW4 went through 4 transmissions in 250,000 miles , first one went at 19,000 miles
From experience I would never call them tanks , good but,............
My 04 KJ that I bought new, over 235,000 miles and not one issue with transmission, and has been through as much or more than any of the XJs ( has had a shift kit since about 10,000 miles )
