So, I've done several of these Trango Shift Kit installs, but I'm stumped on my Jeep.

I've got all the screws out that hold the valve body in, but something is still holding it in. It's not the electrical harness, as I've disco'd that. I believe the shift position shaft is catching or something. I can get it to drop about 1/2", but then nothing.

Does anyone have experience putting one of these in? Any tricks I need to know?

Fast replies appreciated, although I see it's after 1am so I may have to wait until tomorrow to finish.

Thanks!

Well, I found some directions on removal of the valve body, and it is what I thought it to be. It appears the shift lever needs to be removed, which is what I've been working on, however it is a real PITA to get to. I'm about to pull up some carpet and drill a hole thru the floorboard!

If anyone has any suggestions please pass them on.

Thanks

Looked at transmission removal in the FSM and all it really shows related to the shifter is:

12. Disconnect gearshift cable from transmission
manual valve lever.
13. Disengage the shift cable from the cable support
bracket.

No diagram or anything.

Yeah, I found a service manual for the 42RLE. It appears that the gear selector shaft is attached to the valve body, and that shaft goes up thru the top of the transmission housing, where the shift lever attaches to it. It's just a PITA to get to the bolt that holds the shift lever on. Was trying to see if anyone had experience getting it off.

Thanks

I ran into the same problem when I tried to install the shift kit. Dropped down a 1/2in and that was it. Ive never had anyone say how you get that thing off.. I bolted it back up and said screw it.

well, finally got this done. what a pita! you have to remove the front drive shaft to get to the bolt that holds the shift lever on, and you practically have to remove the right exhaust to get to the solenoid wiring harness, although i managed to get it off and back on w/o doing that.

so far it shifts pretty quick, but i didn't go very far for a test drive, just wanted to make sure it was all working, then i reset the tcm and haven't gone anywhere since.

as for the overall install goes...i would practically suggest taking it somewhere to have done, or plan on being out of operation for a couple days. i'll put up a how-to, as that would definitely have saved some time knowing what steps to take as i went along, instead of having to figure it out as i go. but overall, this is the toughest transmission i've worked on as far as getting to the connectors, the way the valve body installs, etc.

Haha think the install was worth it so far? :D
