Hi,

I have a 2004 Jeep Liberty Sport 4x4 (6 cyl) and it seems that i am having an issue with the driver side rear caliper seizing up. The caliper was replaced a year ago since it was having problems on that side. At the time the brake hose was on backorder and so it didnt get replaced.

Well it started having problems with seizing up again and causing the pad and rotor to wear down extremely fast but just on that side. So my mechanic, who is a friend, went to order the Brake Hose since he had run into that problem before with a jeep liberty and suspected it could be the hose. Well the price came back at $375.00 for just the hose!!!! ...which if you know is about a 6 inch piece of tube going from the brake line to the caliper!! insane! and apparently this rear hose can only be ordered through the dealer...no oem that i can find.

Apparently there was an issue with the hoses and chrylser had to pay someone to make a new batch (this is what the parts guy told me at the dealer) ...and apparently they got ripped off and are passing that cost along to the consumer! thanks.

Well the guy at the dealer said you might be able to use the opposite side hose...which btw i can get for like 30 bucks..but he wasnt positive. I looked and compared the hoses on both sides and they appear to be the same...but was going to look closer this weekend.

Was wondering if anyone had heard of this problem...seems crazy and no way i am paying that much for a little hose. I could possibly get one from a junk yard but not sure if that would be a great idea.

thanks!

I would go to a wrecking yard and have the automotive parts recyclers, (One of their) automotive parts disassemblers or go in yourself and find the very part you need.
Or have your "friend" (Sorry, but he should of thought of this in the first place,do it for you!

No doubt on the Stainless Steel lines, definitely would be cheaper than $400 if they're available for the KJ.

I think TJKJ mentioned the upgrade before...

Thanks for the replies so far. I am going to make some calls today and see if i can find one at a local junkyard. If not i may try getting the opposite side one from the dealer and see if it will fit (hopefully without having to do much modification).

If those don't pan out where do you recommend buying stainless/custom lines from? any links?

thanks for the help!

update:

I called the nice people at classictube.com and asked about the braided hoses that TJ suggested. He was very helpful and although they didnt carry the hose in a kit he said that he could easily make me one for around 50 bucks! (They did carry a kit for jeep liberty but it only included 3 pcs, as it was designed for drum brakes in the back, whereas i have 4 disc)

he said i could take measurements and figure which exact bolts i needed etc and he would make it from that or overnight the old hose to him and he would make it from that an overnight it back.

thanks for help guys

Any good speed shop worth their salt can also make up a Russell or Aeroquip stainless steel over braid/Teflon tube brake line.
Heck, if they can do it here in B.C., I'm sure you will be able to find a shop in your local area!
Just Google Russell or Aeroquip stainless steel over braid/Teflon tube brake line + your area!

oh
thats the banjo bolt and if you take it off your hose will weep brake fluid. I cant remember the size from when I replaced my caliper on the wheel. If you look back at my posts you will see I have something about thinking this was a recall/TSB item, but apparently it wasnt. I seem to remember the rear calipers being a known issue, especially the driver side. My new caliper was fine, but when we get drastic climate change or let the car sit awhile it will stick, which tells me it isnt the caliper that is faulty.
