I purchased my Jeep from a non-Chrysler dealer. When I signed the paperwork I was told there were two keys yet by the time I took delivery of the vehicle one of them had disappeared. I was promised a second key and the dealer has been dragging this on for 2 months now. I just spoke with him and he said that he was told due to the plant shutdown parts such as keys are on backorder. When I asked how much longer he was told he had to check back in 2 weeks. I pretty much told him this sounds bogus and that I could just walk into the Jeep dealership (which is literally across the street) and buy a key.

If he can't get me a second key he offered a monetary compensation. I guess I'll just call my local stealership and see what it will cost and ask for that. But, since my Jeep still has this missing key floating around out there, possibly at a dealership where whoever has my key may have access to my info (such as address), should I ask for a new key and a new program on the Jeep's computer? Or is that even possible?

The keys can be re-programmed. Best to get a quote from the dealer across the street and see what the original dealer is willing to pay.

Keys can not be reprogrammed...

In my 05 I bought I have the keyless entry installed...I wanted to buy another keyless entry key for myself as I gave my old lady the original....But I had a spare normal key as well I kept...

Well I took my key put it in...fired it up....it shut down like 5 seconds later...did it again...died again...Tried again....cranked but no fire....tried again....wont even crank now...
My problem is the keys have a chip in them that only allow them to be used with that vehicle...

The Keyless entry might be reprogramable
But the chip is a 1 time shot and cannot be reprogrammed....

BTW When I bought my 2nd key it was 185 from the stealership and 15 to program it...
Make them pay....thats BS....they lost the key they need to man up and pay for it...

Im use to buying extra keys for my work trucks for like 10 a piece or something but 185 WTF!!!!

The computer can be programmed for what keys it should recognize, just like programming for a new key fob on the keyless entry. There was a LONG post about this a while back. In the end the owner took it to the dealer, they hooked up the DRBII and programmed the computer to accept his original and his new key and everyone was happy.

So if you took it to a dealer they will not only have to program your new key into the system but they also have to program your existing key in as well. From that point on it will only allow those two keys. Why? Because the computer stores the codes from the chip in the keys. When you put it in the ignition it checks the code from the key, if it matches one of the codes stored in memory as an allowed key then it works, simple as that.

Same with the key fobs, they send a code to the keyless entry, if that code is in the memory then the fob works. When you program a new fob to the system, i've already done this myself, you have to be sure to add your existing fob back in first then your new one, otherwise when your done you new one will work but your existing one won't.

Last year my neighbor went through this ignition key issue on his Dodge truck. He lost a key and fob. He had a spare and went to the dealer and bought a new key and fob, they programmed the new key and fob to the truck. Well as luck would have it about three months later the lost key and fob showed up under the seat of a buddies car. He was all excited but the key and fob no longer worked, why? Because the system was reprogrammed by the dealer to accept the spare and the new one he bought to replace the one he lost. Another trip to the dealer with all three keys and fobs and they got all three programmed in.

Edit: Look on eBay and you can find the keys cheaper than the dealer and then just pay them to do the programming. And long story short once its all done even if the other key shows up it won't work anymore after reprogramming.

Oh just to clear this up quick... The key itself no... The computer that recognizes the key yes. Don't mean to correct you just wanted to state this so as to not confuse the OP with the yes and no answers.

You didn't mention if you have the fob style key, or a seperate key and fob. Here is an example of just the sentry key off eBay.

True. The SKIS system *CAN* be reprogrammed.

Hey Marlon glad you chimed in here, i was trying to find it in the search, didn't someone post how to add a second key to the 05-07 model year as long as you had one working key?

I'm not sure of a way. It can definitely be done with TWO keys but not with one.... trip to the dealer solves that though.

Marlon is right I think. With an 05 it says in the owners manual that you need 2 working keys to program a third key..........so it is important to have the 2nd key.

Otherwise you need to take it to the dealer to program a 2nd key if you only have one key..

Even with an '02 - '04, you still need two keys to program a third. If you have one key and want to program a second.... dealer...

Yep yep yep...

Just skimmed through the owners manual for 02-04 and 05-07 and thats the dealio... You need two keys to program yourself. I suppose they figure this makes it more secure, for example you can't "borrow" the owners key and program a second key to the vehicle while they aren't looking.

I'm glad i don't have the sentry system on my 03'. I have two fobs, one i got off a board member and one that came with it. Programmed the second fob myself. And recently i saw a like new one on eBay with no bids and low shipping so i bought a third one and programmed it and tossed it in the safe with another spare key at home. So even if one of the other two die or get lost i'm still good.

I bought some nice OEM style Jeep blanks off eBay and had the local hardware store cut them for $1 each. I set up all my keychains the same, i use one of those quick seperate things and on one side there is just a key, on the other side i have a second key and the fob and my house key.

Ok why you ask? Because in the winter i can start it up and take my fob and second key, along with my house key, and then lock the vehicle and let it idle and warm up, or stay warm whatever the case is. And even if the fob were to fail, i had one die in the cold one time due to a weak battery, i still have that other key to get back in. Along with the spares at home and the spare $.75 key from the hardware store i keep in my wallet. Hey i would rather spend $10 on keys then pay for one lockout call, they **** you for that where i live.

If you lived here, you wouldn't be sorry that you don't have the Sentry Key system.

Unless you LIKE your Jeep to be stolen every year...

Here even with the Sentry, I display a club on the wheel, for those dumb ones who might think to break in anyways..every bit helps...even a brake pedal club is enough to give a hint. I also put a sticker on that clearly states...

Had the same problem with my 05 when I bought it, only one key. Bought a second online for $85 (with built in keyless entry fob) and had the dealer cut and program for $30. There are plenty of places online to buy for half the dealer cost. SEARCH! They are right, if you have two keys you can program a third yourself, but if you only have one the dealer has to do it!

Clubs only increase repair costs.

one VERY quick slice of the steering wheel and that club is gone. I told that to this one guy at work, he wasn't paying a bit of attention to me.... after he left the Casino one night........ you guessed it, club gone, steering wheel sliced, ignition busted but thanks to Sentry Key..... his Stratus was still there.

Boy you guys have some high vehicle theft rates there then... And i agree, the club ain't worth crap.

My neighbors never even lock their cars, and in ten years nothing has happened. We just don't have that kind of crime around here. I lock my vehicles out of habit, if someone wants to break in to do a smash and grab they will regardless of a security system, sentry key, you name it... Just have good insurance is all you can do now days.

Seems i hear that all the time on the Sentry thing though, they broke in and smashed it up and then realized it wouldn't start. Perhaps they need to alert the potential thief to the fact that it has the Sentry system before they break in... lol

I have the key with the built in FOB. And that's what I want for my second key (which will end up on my wife's key chain).

I really appreciate all the feedback. I'm sticking to my guns and making them pay for it so I don't care how much the dealer charges. The more the better. I'm fed up with the dealer I bought my Jeep from.

First he lost my key, then he gave me temp dealer plates for 2 weeks while they retrieved the title so they could register it to me...except it took them three weeks so I was driving around with illegal dealer plates for a week. I would bash the hell out of them on here but since they aren't even a Jeep dealer it won't do any good. Lesson learned. Next Jeep will be purchased from a real Jeep dealer.

Seems like thats the best, make them pay for it. But perhaps you might want them to pay for having it done at the actual Jeep dealer, cause i doubt their ability to do it... LOL

As for the other hassles... That's they way it goes, got to go where the deal is, or who has the used vehicle you want, and just deal with the rest.

I bought my KJ from a local small town shop, it was a repairable with a salvage title, but after looking at the pictures i can't believe the original owners insurance company did a write-off on it with only 45k on the clock. Pretty light damage to the front compared to some repairables i have seen, no frame damage, just body damage. Oh well it got me a good deal on it and i have had salvaged vehicles before, as long as its a good reputable shop that stands behind their work you won't have any problems going this route.

same boat here. my 03 limited came with one key and one fob. I was told by Jeep that it wasn't a chipped key. A trip to home depot and a dollar later I had a key that got me in and started the jeep. Since my wife drives it everyday she got the fob, and I just use the single key with no fob and no problems!
