This weekend while driving at about 70 mph (in 2WD), I suddenly experienced severe front end vibration. I pulled over and checked my tires and looked at the drive train for any obvious signs of what was causing the problem. I didn't see anything. I continued to drive and the vibration continued until suddenly it stopped, but it felt and sounded like something broke. I again pulled over and crawled under vehicle and could see fresh grease splatter near one of the boots on the front driveshaft. I drove it home and everything was fine and there was no vibration. When I got home I inspected the front driveshaft and see the boot was torn open. Full disclosure, I experienced a less noticeable vibration and whining noise when in 4WD 3-4 months ago and brought it in to a transmission repair place. They said the front driveshaft needed to be replaced, so I had them install a new one. Since the boot was now obviously torn, I called the same transmission repair place since the new driveshaft and labor would have been covered under warranty. They confirmed the boot was obviously torn, but could not explain what happened since the vibration was no longer present. They installed a new front driveshaft yesterday.
Anyone have any ideas on what could have happened?
Since the grease looked fresh, I'm assuming that the vibration was being caused by the driveshaft and that the noise I heard of something breaking is what caused the boot to tear open ... though I can't be certain What would cause the front drive shaft to fail in 2WD? In 2WD should the front driveshaft even be turning? I appreciate any suggestions or ideas anyone has.

In 2wd everything up front turns up until the transfer case. So your front axel cvs, front diff, and front driveshaft.

You most likely didn't need a whole need driveshaft and just needed the cv joint that goes in to the transfercase. It's a simple enough repair to do yourself with basic handtools.

Remanned NAPA CVs
rest of the ***zones etc are too short in most cases
so avoid Autozones, O'Reillys, Advanced, PepBoys
